Restaurant(s) with great wine list in San Francisco?

My friend Rainer is currently in San Francisco and looking for a restaurant with exceptional wine list. Recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Tell him to have a liquid dinner at Terroir. Best list in town.

Thanks! That's the one in Folsom Street?

David,
My impression from your posts is that Ranier likes big wines and isn't afraid to spend a bit, is that fair?

He likes natural-flavoured wines with minerality and finesse, but doesn't mind if they're sizeable in addition. Even if his favourite reds are probably Burgundy, Piedmontese Nebbiolo and Rhne, he also loves Bordeaux, Napa etc. as long as they're non-modernistic, non-oaky and non-artificial-flavoured (= he's really picky, in fact no less than I am!). When it comes to whites and dessert wines, he absolutely loves Riesling and Tokaji Asz, plus some exceptional Loire.

OK.

Terroir is actually a pretty good shot, then, particularly if he buys a bottle or two to drink at the bar. The French taco truck is probably not across the street today, sadly.

He could also consider Perbacco/Barbacco.

Thanks! Should perhaps have mentioned he doesn't quite share my curiosity and patience in tasting and judging wine - he prefers to drink a goodly amount of something he really likes, and thinks of tasting/evaluating wine as no more than a necessary evil.

Without taking a position on hipness or value, a few places with serious lists
include Bacar, Rubicon, RN 74.

I think La Ciccia, A16, and the now infamous Baker and Banker have good lists too.

Slanted Door is big and touristy but has a good riesling list.

I hope that helps.

Rubicon is closed (insert sad face)

A16 changed chefs and many said it went downhill. The wine list might still be exceptional.
Yhr Slanted Door is Vietnamese but has a great list for whites. It's also difficult to get into on short notice. Sitting at the counter for lunch is a good option.
Plumpjack Cafe is a restaurant for the Plumpjack winery and have reasonable mark ups on wine (not just Plumpjack), Check out the wine list on the Web.
Chapeau! is another place with reasonable markups and maybe a better wine list than Plumpjack Cafe.

Quince and Michael Mina woud come to mind, in addition to places already mentioned.

Spruce's list is pretty good too; especially if one is not looking at the lower end of the price spectrum.

So?How did he do?

Not sure yet - he apparently had to call innumerous places to get a reservation... No wonder! ;^)

Boulevard, Mission Street - all I've heard so far is that they liked it there (and that all the other recommended places were fully booked).

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
