2002 Huet Petillant

Some of the big Champagne houses will declare, and these will be fine in 2023 when he turns 21. Well, maybe not Dom Perignon, but Bolly (non-RD) should be good. Maybe the straight Louis Roederer as well.

But I would load up on mags of the Huet Petillant if it's available. I'm pretty sure I've seen mags of it in Paris in the not-too-distant past.

I'm pretty sure that I saw one in the kitchen of SFJoe's West Coast pied-a-terre back in '05, but for all I know that one was hand-carried from France or Bratislava or somewhere.

Baumard sweeties, including their Constance.

What is a Baumard Constance?

Do you by chance mean Clos Ste Catherine?

Yes, that's what I mean. Doh!

Oh, yeah, I've been researching 02 Champagnes and hope to score mags. All I need now is a foundation grant to fund the purchases.

Wine searcher shows no 1500 bottles of the Huet - perhaps some will arrive with the myth-enshrouded second (late-disgorged, I think) release of this wine. Waiting for Godot?

Finally opened a bottle of this. Should've bought more, it's the '97 all over again. Almost.
Maybe I'm just jealous since I don't have much '97 left, but I think it's better.

It's not as rich, but it's probably a more harmonious wine. I don't have any of the '97 left. Couldn't keep my greedy greedy hands off it.

Just checked. I'm in the same boat.

I concur. The '02 is my fav after the '95.

what is the pressure in huet petillant, around 4bar or less ? is the same true of pinon, chidaine, etc. ?

What happened to going to your place to taste aged versions of this? I guess I'm back to the old-fashioned method of aging them myself.

Will the 05 be out anytime soon and should I be waiting on tenterhooks?

You should be waiting for the 2nd disgorgement of '02.

We can always invite Don Rice or Jeff Connell to my place. Also, I have some '64 left.

that's not the low dosage one, is it ? i didn't care for it very much, although it's quite possible it was just getting over the oxidative flu at the time

How will I know when the 2nd disgorgement is out? There is still a fair amount of the 02 in the same places that had it when I bought it a year or two ago. I assume, though, that these are all stocks and not new releases.

If I tasted a 2nd disgorgement and a first side by side, and if we assumed that my palate was sufficiently sensitive, what would the differences be?

And why am I not waiting on tenterhooks for the next vintage? Am I not obliged to do that for every wine?

Vinum longa, vita brevis.

.sasha,

I think Pinguet was still deciding what to do about dosage. I trust him to find a good solution.

I've mentioned it before, but they are keeping the fizz en tirage longer since 2002, so it will be a while before 2005 is out (assuming they made fizz).

Despite my concerns it's still available. BTW, Chambers has gotten some more NV Pinon Rose in. I'm guessing it's a newer release, anyone know?

I'll be opening one tonight at Grand Sichuan.

If you have a chance, would you post your impression of the Pinon Rose sparkler?
Thanks.

I have to say, I wasn't crazy about the 02 Huet Petillant, but then again at that point of the evening my palate had been out-bubbled (we had it at a blind bubbly tasting that I'll post notes on eventually). I think Jay is right, however, that this was way too young and to me seemed really angry at being opened up, like a petulant teenager. Another few years and I'd like to come back to see what blossomed forth.
