No rush. Didn't seem like it would be going anywhere anytime soon (but we could have predicted that without opening the bottle).

That said, it was fun to drink and certainly worth drinking if you're in the mood. Unlike a couple of years ago when the wines seemed awkward.

'Awkward' is how I found it upon release: kind of angry-spirited. I could never understand how everyone was saying how friendly and nice a wine it was. I have another one still sleeping, because I know Steve's wines can age, even the 'small' ones and I'll probably like it better later when it resolves some of the youthful issues.

What was 'on release' for you? I thought it was quite approachable in fall 06 but then started going through rough spots in 2007. Since I got my first bottles very close to the source, it may not have reached retail outlets across the country until later.

Rahsaan, I had it fall of 07, and felt it needed another 1-2 years to sort out, so maybe that was one of the 'angry spells', eh?

2008 Edmunds St John Heart of Gold (Paso Robles)
This was the second vintage of the HoG, and I found it a better wine than its 2007 predecessor. Its quite fruity (pear, nectarine), and has a touch of back end creaminess that buffers the wine from being too austere on the finish.

I had preferred the 2007, but another bottle of the 2008 was much better last night with some pernil, rice and beans with a squeeze of lime.

But I can't argue with the general consensus of WF coming out on top. Though the blends remind me that I like most pre-1995 Chateauneuf. Those are some beautiful wines.
