Interesting, Recent Tastes

I'm celebrating your birthday in my own small way. I just finished up my last course paper and am contemplating my thesis topic over a bad glass of Cayron Gigondas. This is the stuff that has kept me so far from trying any Pallieres.

Cheers.

I haven't been moved by Cayron in the last few years, though I haven't found it bad. I used to love the stuff. I wonder what happened to it. Pallieres is also OK but not worth the hype. I'd look for Raspail Ay and Gour de Chaul. Of new Parker hyped Gigs, I like St. Damien.

I don't have long experience with Cayron. I've found recent stuff bad, 2003 in particular. Interesting to hear you like St. Damien. The Parker/Cambie connection scared me.

edited to add: Any thoughts on Busquire? I really liked their 2003 but found 04 way overdone, and, I think, 05 as well, though my memory of the latter is hazy.

I've probably tasted Bousquiere at the Caveau, but I don't have much memory of it, which may say something. I am not a big fan of many Gigs from either 03 or 04. I don't know what happened. The 03s aren't like what one would think of that vintage. Rather than overripe and plush, they tend to have thick body but no real flavor or lift. So I don't tend to judge domaines from them.

I first discovered St. Damien in 01, I think before they were imported. I liked their 05s a lot as well, which may have been before Cambie, I don't know. I haven't tasted the 07s, which got the kind of numbers Parker reserves for special cuvees made by St. Cosme and Santa Duc, so maybe they've gone over to the dark side. I'll find out this summer, I guess.
