Good German Riesling trocken? Really?

Oh, and I have some '05 Holle that I picked up on winebid at a good price about 2 years ago. How long do you suggest holding it for? I've been assuming that this isn't a good time to be opening '05s...
I opened a 2005 Stielweg about a month ago and it was showing fine. Based on my experience, I would say dry wines close down faster (like right upon bottling) than fruity style wines and then reopen again (like a year +/- after bottling) quicker.

Interesting! Thanks Claude!

If anybody has Kuenstler wines from earlier this decade it might be worthwhile checking what kind of closure they have. They used plastic cork for a while on some of their wines, including Hoelle etc, and these do not age as well. Not sure when they started and for how long. Also, sometimes parts of the same batch were closed with cork and others with plastic.

In addition to what Lyle and Salil suggest (and I would't limit myself to GG), and just off the top of my head and in no particular order, so others are being left out unintentionally:

Weil
Wegeler (Rheingau)
Leitz
Spreitzer
Khn
Flick
Jung
Frst
Wirsching
Castell
Ho. Sauer

Breuer
Bassermann-Jordan
Brgerspital
Juliusspital
Bergdolt
Bickel-Stumpf
Schmitt's Kinder

W. Schaefer (yeah, Willi Schaefer in Graach, even though Terry doesn't take the dry wines)
Siegrist
J L Wolf
Liebfrauenstift (formerly P. J. Valckenberg)
Freiherr von Simmern (recent)
Schloss Johannisberg
Sankt Urbanshof
Hofkeller Wrzburg

So is 2007 a prime candidate to be closed right now?

Georg brought a 2007 Stielweg Alte Reben last night that some folks at the table were raving about but I found awkward with such intense ripe tropical pineapple flavors and then a flimsy weak structure that didn't support the flavors. I wasn't sure if that awkwardness was my own lack of understanding the wine (coming from my MSR paradigm) or if it was indeed in an awkward stage. Because others seemed convinced of the 'quality' of the wine.

I think it should be coming into shape now, but probably will be better in 2-3 years. I've been impressed with it when I've had it, so I suspect you are correct that you have to get outside the MSR paradigm, although I'm not sure what you mean by "flimsy, weak structure."

It seemed relatively thin (in comparison to the richness I was expecting from the intense tropical flavors).

But for a wine that was so thin it was also relatively loose (which is where I get flimsy - because it was not very focused in the mouth).

Others seemed impressed by those intense tropical flavors and the big shining minerality but to me the structure was a mess, although that may just be a stage/not getting enough air/etc. Or indeed it may be my MSR Partisanship, and there were other bottles on the table that attracted me more. (Although I did return several times to re-try the Stielweg).

What temperature was it served at? I wonder if it wasn't too warm?

That could have been an issue. We were in a 'casual' Chinese place and none of the bottles were kept in coolers. By the end of the evening the whites were definitely getting warmish. Will keep all of this in mind and look forward to trying another bottle.

It was definitely too warm. I had pulled it straight out of my wine storage unit, so it was not colder than 55 or so to begin with.
