2006 Umbria Rosso 'San Valentino'.
.... Run to your favorite wine store and beg/demand that they carry this item, this is the best $30 bottle I have tasted this year.

This is lovely, thanks for the recommendation. $27, lugged home from Garnet to Brooklyn.

Seconded (or thirded)...vibrant, excellent snappy juice

Fourthed. Split a bottle of the 06 valentino last night with tofurky at flour+water and I fershluggin loved it.

Scott, you have never tried Zidarich? They're good wines but the terrano is really the one worth seeking out.

levi says i had some at the orange dinner at c. i have to check my notes...

05 Malvasia and 05 Vitovska, you had. Neither particularly impressive, at least in my glass(es). I've enjoyed both much more in other environments.

I was in Umbria last August and very few of the people I met there who dealt in wine had ever heard of Paolo Bea.

The only place I was able to drink a bottle of the Arboreus was in Montefalco proper. At a joint called l'Alchimista.

I ate most of my meals in restaurants recommended by the Slow Food Guide. How come Bea doesn't have more fans in the region?

Is most of his production exported?
That is a bit surprising. I was in an upscale restaurant over to the west, Hotel Villa di Monte Solare (near Panicale) and they had a wine list that focused almost exclusively on Umbria. In fact, I am not sure that I saw a single Tuscan or Piemontese wine. Anyway, the 2001 Bea Sagrantino de Montefalco occupied a special place on their list and came highly recommended by the sommelier there, so at least he knew of Bea...
