I liked Leitz' QBA Drachenstein 2008 better than Adam's 2008 Hofberg Kabinett better than Schafer-Frohlich's 2006 Bockenauer Felseneck Spatlese. All were good wines and the S-F will show better down the line than it did right now. The Adam was great. The Leitz was even better IMO. The Adam had more concentration but the Leitz had infinite purity.

Porter Creek 1991 RRV Pinot Noir (11.9 ABV!!) is simple but solid. It also has that rich taste/scent that normally makes you want to puke in a lot of new world PN but here it's part of the flavor profile and enjoyable. It is better than the Sinskey 1991 Los Carneros PN which is drinkable and has the basic earth, fruit etc. Two drinkable California PNs at age 19 is a nice thing. Neither was great, the Porter Creek was good, but neither sucked, which makes them both big winners relative to a lot of my new world pinot experience.

Clos Roche Blanche Cuvee Gamay 2008 blows Marcel Lapierre MMVII out of the water. Both are excellent wines. The Lapierre has more silk and the CRB has more concentration. Normally I like silk and dislike concentration. And I also don't particularly like that fascinating iron note tinting the deep, deep depths of the Cuvee Gamay. It doesn't matter, the wine is awesome. It will even age better than the Lapierre. And that Lapierre is a very fine Beaujolais. But the '08 CRB is like the Haut-Brion of Gamay or something. Unbelievable wine. I am an idiot for not buying more of this.

Domaine Gramenon Ceps Centenaires La Meme 2007 is better than most Grenache I have ever had, and better than all the wines above except for the Leitz and CRB Gamay, and it's richer and more concentrated than either of those and pairs better with lamb, so there you go. It also smells like roses in an almost Piedmont way which frankly I had never experienced in Grenache. Recommended if you can find it and worth seeking out. Yum.

I just wish the bottles came with little arms and boxing gloves..whichever bottle pops the cork of the other wins!

Last weekend, a Coste Piane Prosecco just completely mopped up the floor with a Puzelat KO......ironic, ain't it?

Thanks for the notes. I remembered Drachenstein as being a big sugary, but I haven't tried it since the 2002's were released. Maybe it's time to try again.

I saw some 08 CdRB gamay on ebay earlier - you can probably still get a bid in!

Joe brought in a limited batch with real cork. I put a few a way for purposes of scientific inquiry - I'm sure others did, too. Come by in a few years and help me assess the results!

I haven't tasted a Gramenon in years. I'll have to look out for it. Has it really become unKacherized?

All those preferences make my head spin.

2003-2006 Leitz Drachenstein were all overly sugary/lacking in focus. The 2007 was better, butnot on par with 2002 and certainly not the 2001. The 2008 seems to be headed back to the 2001/2002 mold which is encouraging. The 2001 is stll developing in a positive way.

I've had that '08 Adam many times. Still haven't liked it enough to buy any.

Served at a small party. The casual wine drinkers loved it. I think it's fine but it's too fat for me. I actually have that problem with some Donnhoff and W. Schaefer (sp.?) Kabinetts too.

In re Leitz: I haven't had past vintages of this. 2008 is in screwcap so I don't know what that portends for aging. It is sweet but I wouldn't characterize it as sugary or fat. Liked it very much in any case. It has the lime and flowers thing without any extra concentration to get in the way. Looks watery but doesn't taste it at all, I found it very pure.

The one above was my last real cork one. Stupid, if I had more I would keep it. But it's so good to drink now maybe I'll just have to go to ebay and get some even if it's under fake cork.

I think the 08 CRB Gamay is at another level from the 07. The 07 was a good wine too, very joyous, but the 08 is _deep_ in a way few gamay wines outside of say 05 cru Beaujolais seem to get to for me.

In re Gramenon: I have mixed feelings about the Sierra del Sud but I'm not much of a Syrah guy. I was very impressed by this wine though, it was delicious.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think I have a personal sensitivity RS in the Germans.

If you don't like RS then there is plenty of dry riesling out there in the world. You won't go thirsty.

No kidding.

Actually, I'm okay with it when it gets old, but don't enjoy it young. Go figure. However, I do need to get into dry Rieslings more.
