Paris wine shops and vinous things

I like L'Estaminet, but I think the wine shop is a little overpriced...

Chapeau Melon is mentioned above!

whoops! apologies for the double up.

but since you mentioned Le Comptoir, l'Avant-Comptoir has a surprisingly large selection of wines that taste good. The food is pretty boring though, crepes and sandwiches etc. And there are no seats. But yes, a fine wine list.

I'd like to pile on in the recommendation of Le Baratin. My best meal in Paris the last time I was there.

I'd also like to second Cave du Pantheon, which has a very disorderly selection of things and the corresponding neighborhood wine bar 3 blocks away--Cafe de Nouvelle Marie. By the glass selection was fantastic, though I just had 2 glasses of wine, Lapierre nouveau, was one of them, if I recall correctly. I didn't have food.

Cheers,

Kevin

The new blog of a friend here in Paris is filling rapidly with swell recommendations:

Since you'll be here in December I cannot stress enough the importance of hitting Le Baron Rouge on a Saturday or Sunday around 1pm or so. Good wines, great oysters, even better atmosphere....

"I realized I was shilling wine for a living, with no goal in mind, enduring an itinerant, hand-to-mouth existence largely dependent upon the pretensions of drunks, and if I wanted to live like that I might as well just be a writer."

I just spent an inordinately enjoyable time reading that blog. Josh, thanks for the link.
