My little varietal

Varietal, varietal, wherefore art thou varietal?

Who cares, man. What I am here to post about in my punkish, curled-lip way is the variety of grape known to one and all (of the Anglophone persuasion*) as Grenache Gris.

I have had two of late, and I have loved those two. I have had one of the two (this gets complicated, but stay with me) twice.

2008 Domaine de L'Anglore "Sels d'Argent" is worth knocking over small old ladies to get to. A brush of oxidation, round yet sharp, this is Loire oddities of the south.

2008 Clos de l'Origine "Les Quilles Libres" (god help the pun**), yowza, very much like a certain steely savagnin from Bindernagel I had a few weeks ago. It has such utter acidity, such wiry and unpredictable aromatics. This cannot be from the Ctes Catalanes, yet it is. And it's gorgeous.

*Yes, it is a choice. If you weren't degenerates, you'd all be speaking French. -Brad Kane

**Pronounced like l'quilibre, i.e. "balance."

I was just enjoying a sylvaner rouge the other day. But no puns from me. Sharon's doing just fine all by herself.

Is that the Sylvaner to which they added 10% Syrah from the Rhne (rumored to be from Chave's 1990 Hermitage cuve Cathelin) so that for a mere $6500 I could experience the same thing that Louis XIV did when he celebrated his conquest of Strasbourg? How is it? I heard they only made 17 bottles of it.
