I'll make the trek to Mahwah next visit. Which is probably next week.

If you're serious get there reasonably early as they sometimes run out. Also, don't bother with the almond croissants which are only so-so. Some pastries are great, some aren't (there's something with Tahitian vanilla in the description which is to be avoided). The chocolates are good but nothing to go out of your way for.

1988 Von Schubert Maximin Grnhauser Abtsberg Riesling Sptlese

Just goes to show, Grnhauser in the 70s and 80s was BOMB. Precise and still has some more to show.

Nathan (or anyone else who wants to reply):

Does this mean it wasn't as good in the 1990s? Specifically I'm eying a 1994 Herrenberg spatlese.

I haven't been drinking Von Schubert for long but have received some guidance from those who have, and I've generally been pointed to the Abstberg bottles over Herrenberg.

Had the 99 Von Schubert Abstberg Auslese last night actually. Pretty nice wine. Lacking some focus. But went quite well with the food.

Oh, they were good. The '98s are spectacular, but I've had some great '93s - both Herrenberg and Abtsberg. The '93 QbA is fantastic as well, just entering drinking age in my view.

Buy it. Asssuming you like Grunhaus. And assuming it isn't priced horribly (it was available at the winery last year for something like 15euros although I would expect it to be more Stateside). I had some last summer and found it delightful and would expect it to still be pumping pleasure. Again, assuming you like brisk Grunhaus.

Abtsberg may tend to be more 'profound' than Herrenberg but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the latter. Far from it.

Jay, you prefer them to the Bouley Bakery croissants?

I haven't tried the Bouley Bakery croissants. Fortunately that's easily remedied.

Took longer than expected but the Bouley Bakery croissants are excellent. I'd put them equal in quality to the ones at Bon Appetit though slightly different in style.

I also tried one of their macarons for the first time and was equally pleased. Tried going to Fauchon for macarons last night and discovered it's been turned into an empty lot so this was a welcome reprieve.

Looking at the dates on the posts preceding the one above I would love to participate but my time machine is broken and is in the shop.

Jay, I know you love to plan events ages in advance, but this is pushing the envelope, even for you.

I don't understand. Are you telling me that you don't know what you're doing after the universe comes to an end and eventually restarts in a fashion that duplicates our current history so that 12/8/2008 comes around again?
