Wine from China?

I thought we might have addressed this at some point, but I don't see it.

Have a friend who's taken a post in Beijing and asked whether there was anything worth keeping an eye out for.

What does he like? Grace Vineyards is the most palatable of the big boys. I would not order Changyu or Great Wall anywhere.

The Dragon's Hollow Chardonnay is decent, but I've seen it all over California now (Broadbent Selections), so it might not be the exotic find your friend is looking for, but I like it just fine.

I was at a seminar about emerging wine regions a few years ago, wherein Jancis Robinson noted that a large quantity of "Chinese" wine was made from grapes imported into China.

From Australia, yes?

Interesting and informative. Thanks much, all.

Yixin, are there non-"big boys" that you'd recommend specifically?

Anyone have any pointers specifically for Beijing (shops, restaurants, wine bars, etc.)?

Err, no. Haven't drank enough to comment.

What's your friend interested in? For restaurants, Nick Lander had an okay article some time back in the FT. Haven't really done the wine bars.

I don't really know what her preferences are- I've only seen her once or twice in the half-a-lifetime since our K-12 days.

But she's a globe-hopper (lived in West Africa, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Louisiana, et al.)- Peace Corps, diplomatic posts, etc. and has specialized in disaster management- FEMA, consulting, UN... Now she's heading up a joint venture for the UN and various NGOs- the "Integrated Research on Disaster Risk" program based out of the Chinese Academy of Science.

So, my guess would be that she'd love pointers to things both exemplary of "local" and "worldly."

I'll see if I can dig up the FT article- many thanks.

I had a taste of a "Chinese" merlot that was utterly terrible. I couldn't even drink it if I was shivering and shaking with DTs. I'd rather drink cough syrup.
