Massa Vecchia Bianco 2007

Overall a correct example of pure malvazia di candia from Maremma that undergoes extended skin contact and sees no SO2 additions.

I love this wine. Just make sure when you're buying the bianco you get the Malvazia di Candia. Oddly enough (at least i'm 90% sure in the past they did this) they make several different blends and call them all "bianco."

Massa's whites can be a bit tricky sometimes, in all their natualness. I love them but agree that i like the Malvasia di Candia the best for the whites. It is the most consistently inconsistent (in the best possible way).

I'm not sure Slovenia's an except for the Italian penisula, but zidarich and klinec* could be added to the list. I opened up an '06 klinec malvasia and an 05 last night with some fresh green beans, fava beans and a hunk of pecorino fresco.

ciao matteo, sorry I missed you in Boston.

ernest.

*I import klinec, sorry for the plug.

Has anybody ever counted how many malvasias are out there?
A decent enoteca in Friuli will have them by the wheelbarrow, probably outnumbered only by friulano and ribolla.

Had a half bottle of '05 Edi Kante Malvasia last night. Of the few Malvasias I've had it's my favorite. Got a couple bottles on closeout for $10, should have bought more.

the new 07 malvasia from i clivi is delicious. A new release as they seperated a couple of their normal cuvees to create some new wines (verduzzo secco, etc).

The verduzzo has been made for years, unless they've got a new bottling in addition to the old one. But I'm intrigued by the malvasia.

Yes indeed the verduzzo has been made for years though more of it was used for blending into other whites. It is now and has been for "years" its own wine. The malvasia is "new" as of 07, in the past it has been blended with the verduzzo and tocai, etc for some other whites.

It is quite a nice wine, and very affordable.
