07 Chidaine Montlouis "Clos Habert"

As opposed to the 05 "Tuffeaux", which I had the other night, which was flavorful enough (in a sweet quince kind of way) but going all flabby.

Didn't it always lean flabby?

not in my experience. first ones i drank were '99s and have had every vintage since.

I meant the 05. I remember it was so rich on release and there were hopes that it would slim down and gain definition with time. I guess not yet.

The 07 Tuffeaux is laserlike and wonderfully precise. I didnt much like to 06 because it was too rich and had the proverbial flab (for me anyway).

any recent experience with the '03 tuffeaux?

yes, but i don't keep tasting notes (something i should remedy)but you've given me an excuse to open one tonight with asian takeout. i will report back.

i do remember the wine showing the ripeness from the vintage but i can provide something more accurate tomorrow or later tonight.

thanks bill. i'm all (or nearly all) ears.

2003 les tuffeaux, drank 6/8, apricot, lemon, and a bit of rain water on the nose. some hints of minerality and maybe a slight hint of gun powder too.
definitely a viscous mouth feel i would associate with late harvest wines. taste is more about fruit than classic chenin minerality. showing the effects of the vintage but still has decent structure and nice acidity.

worked very well with pork dumplings, hamachi kama, salmon skin salad, and stir fried basil chicken. oddly, for me anyway, the food didn't really have an effect on the wine tastewise.

not sure if this will gain complexity with more time but i'm pretty sure the wine has some years ahead of it.

i may have some '05 habert around too. if so i will open on ethis weekend and post a note for those interested.

i do remember loving the 2005 les bournais.

If I had to name the most underpriced, underrated producer I know, there's a good chance I'd say Chidaine.

Underrated, yes, underpriced, I'm not so sure. I suspect they are carrying some debt service for the Clos Baudoin.
