bea sagrantino secco question

I had the 04 last week at a restaurant and loved it so I went looking for it. Greg at Envoyer (who has that 06 "cheapie" raved up before for $27) has both the 04 and the 05 for $70. I've not had the 05. Thoughts on which I should buy?

first, keep in mind that the 06 umbria rosso san valentino (cheapie) is declassified montefalco rosso, not sagrantino secco.

to my taste, the 04 is drinking much better now. the 05 needs some time, but the 04 is alive and kicking now.

thanks, scott - as I mostly drink red burg, not sure I appreciate the point re 06 - I mean I understand that it is a different wine (before declassification) - but I don't immediately think "or montefalco rosso, that's like this ____, whereas the sagrantino is like that." So in light of the fact that you've had both, would you describe the difference? Not that I'm expecting the 06 to be like the 04 at all - just curious about what the 06 is like and as I've had the sagrantino 04 I have a point of reference.

The difference is Sagrantino blended with Sangiovese + others (Montefalco Rosso), or Sagrantino by itself.

The '06 San Valentino is very much lighter and prettier and the Sagrantino '04.

i think the 04 Secco is a monster of a wine that is hiding behind a shroud of youth at the moment. It is pleasurable to drink right now, but in my personal opinion it will develop really well, and grow along the way. The 05 Secco, which was only tasted with Giampiero so far, was richer and bolder already. youthful certainly, but drinkable (as i think all his wines are even upon release) none the less. I think it is a showyer wine at the moment that will calm down nicely and find its grove. (did anyone else notice the ca. 10000 bottle jump in production from 04 on the 05 Secco? Giampiero explained eloquently why and how the new vineyards planted some years ago are coming on-line. He seems to have it down masterfully. There is a "super-riserva" lerking out there that is in the works as well.)

what levi said. they are both hard to dislike. as you have liked the 06, i would love to hear your report on the 04.

04 was outstanding - phenomenal in fact in it's brightness, precision and life from a good bottle, and various shades of mediocre from 3 other bottles. I do not believe I've had the 05 or 06.

But was it correct?

if you were speaking to me, it's the 04 sagrantino I've had, not the 06 umbria rosso.

my bad, 04 and 06 for now (for different reasons, see levi's descriptions), 05 for later.

I'm not sure I'd qualify myself to make that determination. I don't drink much Sagrantino and I've unfortunately never been to the area. But I did quite like this one (the good bottle).
