Oxtail in Pergole Torte

This is what my sole bottle from 98 will be used for. I have never seen such a pathetically cheap cork in any bottle other than a Mosel Kabinett for 2.50.
Is that a common problem with Montevertine?
It was very obvious that this would have still been a very youthful wine with lively acid...what a shame.

I think I have had the 98 only once or twice, but I don't recall having any issues whatsoever with the corks. Neither with that vintage nor with any other.

I only had the 2001 and one other older vintage before and I do not remember anything special about the corks either. But this one was a joke and made me pretty sad, especially since one could still get a sense of how beautiful the wine would have been.

The mushroom top and long soak marks up the side make me think that poor storage might be the culprit here, if we are talking about the bottom cork in the picture.

If it was a bottle with bad storage that at least gives me hope for my 2001s which were definitely under my control. For this bottle I am not sure where I got it from. It still hurts.....I was so looking forward to this.
