TN: The 11th Anniversary Birthday Jeebus (June 12, 2010)

Jeff Grossman

Jeff Grossman
The event: A jeebus at Brad Kane's UES apartment in honor of the June/July birthday babies.

The attendees: Brad, Jeff, Jay, Scott + Eden + Pierce (14 weeks old), Don + Melissa, Michel + Veronica, Christy, Christine, Chris (stag, alas), Joe + Denyse + Zaggy (part chihuahua, part terrier, all yip).

The food: sous-vide duck breast and duck-fat potatoes, mushroom tart, spice-rubbed pork loin, the stickiest sticky rice anyone had ever seen, luscious grilled mixed vegetables, lamb stew with olives, fresh green salad, sundry platters (salami, cheeses, breads)

The Early Going

Jose Dhondt NV Brut, Blancs de Blancs - Given to Brad by Alice F as a thank-you for the loan of an old Huet for a photo shoot. Alas, she did not choose her audience well but the rest of us are very happy: brut, indeed; mildly leesy, crisp acidity, cool and not real ripe at all

Clerget 1989 Volnay-Caillerets 1er - The cork crumbles into a zillion pieces as Jay tries to remove it. Decant the liquid through an unbleached coffee filter (yes, we know this isn't optimal but there we are). Tasted immediately the wine is excellent: lots of cherry fruit, a whiff of cheese, ethereal, excellent. A bit later Michel thinks it's dusty and the texture is a bit grainy. Later yet, Brad and Christy think the wine shows the caramel note of heat damage. (Fortunately, I got to it early.)

Weingut Knoll 1987 Gruner Veltliner, Loibner 'Schutt' - ungodly corked, more a munition than a beverage

J-F Ganevat NV Cremant de Jura, "La Combe" Rotalier - 11.5%, all chard; "It's got a nice rainwater thing going on" (Jay), lots of white flowers and tiny fizz, shows a hint of chardonnay pear and papaya but still pretty crisp and not very ripe; I could imagine Don Rice branding this with the name of phantom firms supposed to be located at Reims and Epernay (and I'd drink it!)

The Austrian Couple

Rudi Pichler 2007 Weissenkirchner Achleiten Riesling Smaragd - grassy, green, white pepper, laid back but yum

Prager 2007 Kaiserberg Riesling Smaragd - the same but more: more vivid (Jeff), more precise (Chris)

Cinderella and Her Ugly Step-Sisters

Ch. d'Epire 1996 Savennieres "Cuvee Speciale" - resiny (Don says wine from this vineyard always smells of pine/turpentine to him), minerally, virtually fruitless, delightful

Closel 1996 Savennieres "Clos du Papillon" - slightly too oxidized for me, the pong masks any fruit that might still be present

Baumard 1996 Savenneres "Clos du Papillon" - even more oxidized though a bit of walnutty rancio shows in the finish, Chris finds this wine too lactic to drink

The Reds

Chante-Cigale 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape - warm, ripe, goopy, bleh

Allemand 1999 Cornas "Chaillot" - volatile, refermenting slightly, what a shame

Allemand 2005 Cornas "Chaillot" - violets and other flowers, blackberries, just wow

Rocche dei Manzoni 1998 Barolo "Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano" - oaky, tannic, gritty, with a bitter minty flavor "like sugarless gum" (Michel); DNPIM

Pira e Figli 1968 Barolo - maderized, at death's door and not gracious about being there, "People will say it tastes like old Burgundy" (Joe)

Abadia Retuerta 1999 Sardon de Duero, Pago de Valdebellon - purple, strong lactic note ("blueberry milkshake"), low acid, bleh; Chris thinks it's just goofy and fun

Two More Rieslings

Zind-Humbrecht 2005 Riesling, Clos Saint Urbain, Rangen de Thann - dirty riesling with a bitter finish, "unripe pineapple" (Denyse), Denyse also picks up a lot of petrol

Selbach-Oster 2007 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese "Rotlay" - 2 606 319 028 08, sweet tangerine, acidity a little soft but rebounds in the finish

The Home Stretch

Stag's Leap 1984 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stag's Leap Vineyard - not a thrilling bottle but a nice old drop

Huet 1985 Vouvray Moelleux "Le Mont" - just barely sweet, clean, ripe, very pretty though not very long

Huet 2005 Vouvray Moelleux "Le Mont" 1er Trie - more of everything (except maturity, 'natch)

Too bad about the Closel. I had a brilliant bottle of that a couple of weeks ago.

I remember VS bringing '96 (was it?) Abadia Retuerta crianza to the opening party for the Lahlous' old place in Marin and how much everyone liked it. Too bad those guys peaked so early.

Jeff,
I very much enjoy your notes; precise, without gush and always willing to say what you think (really) - a pleasure to read.
I do hope my bottle of the Closel shows better - it was a beautiful wine last time I tried it.
Best, Jim

We still have two of the 96 Baumard Papillon. The last two, a couple of years ago, my impression was that you penetrated the oxidation after a few sips and entered into a strangely rich, almost luscious wine, though without sweetness, that I thought was pretty good. But perhaps it was just the wine's high alcohol taking hold.

With luck, we'll get Brad's take on this: "battery acid"? "shrilly acidic"? The madding crowd awaits his pronouncement breathlessly.

Pichler 2007 Weissenkirchner Achleiten Riesling Smaragd - grassy, green, white pepper, laid back but yum

Which Pichler? Rudi or Franz-Xavier?

Chante-Cigale 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape - warm, ripe, goopy, bleh

Again, the world eagerly awaits Brad's view on this. I told him that I was giving him a free pass on his likes/dislikes for his b-day, but it isn't his b-day any more, is it?

Thanks for the timely notes, Jeff, and your pithy commentary. It sounds like the whites were overall more successful than than the reds on this night. I agree that it is most unfortunate that the '99 Allemand Chaillots wasn't in better shape.

It was Rudi.

The Knoll was really impressive. I pulled the cork on that and then started removing the foil from the Champagne. From half a table away with nothing poured out of the bottle the TCA was obvious.

I still think the real reason Lisa bailed is that she smelled it from the hospital.

Closel 1996 Savennieres "Clos du Papillon" - slightly too oxidized for me...

Baumard 1996 Savenneres "Clos du Papillon" - even more oxidized...

Stop with the Savennieres hate! Can't chenin blanc get a free ride on the oxidized front?

MLipton: Yes, we definitely had a lot more success with the whites than with the reds. Do you think it was slightly leafy twig night with rooty nest-day vibrations?

MarkS and Sharon: Fortunately, the world has lots of ruined wine for you to drink. I'll take mine not quite so.

It wasn't for me. Most Champagne isn't.

A fun evening for sure, though I was a bit mellow having gotten pooped out making my apartment presentable for everyone.

The Savenniere's flight was disappointing. The D'Epire easily showed the best as it was still fresh and youthful, but I've never been a huge fan of the pine resin character it typically shows. The Closel was showing too much oxidation, which is a bit alarming as a bottle of the '96 Clos Papillon Cuvee Speciale I also opened within the past six or so months also showed more advanced than it should. As for the Baumard, it's been largely showing oxidized the past few years, as has often been reported here, with only a couple of good showings being the exception to the rule. Fwiw, I'm officially off Savennieres.

I didn't get around to trying the Chante-Cigale. The clear red wine of the night was the '05 Allemand. Major yums there. Whites were easily the two Huet. Btw, Jeff, not sure if you had the '85 too cold. When it warmed up a little it was plenty long. Extremely delightful and very mineral driven with white and yellow flowers and fruits. Showed very young, imo.

That's kind of perfect, actually. I've just been thinking how I need more in the house, and you reassure me.

You like Jura, Sherry and other oxidative things that I have no use for, so if the glove fits...

I missed 2 Huets :(

The Allemand was gorgeous once again. Thank you Michel!

I liked the Closel more than most, but I had the advantage of drinking it after the Baumard and before the d'Epire.

My Savennieres is mostly not oxidized. Sorry to hear of your loss.

Mine shouldn't be. They were all purchased on release from reputable places and stored in a Eurocave all this time.
