With pizza, the 2000 Bea, Pagliaro, (100% sagrantino) brought back memories of a trip to Umbria and the fine dinners at Trattoria Festival where sagrantino was about the only red available. Good varietal character, no drying tannins and excellent length. A pleasure.
Also with pizza, a bootle of 1997 Jabolet, Hermitage La Chapelle was a bit reticent until given a couple hours in decanter - then it had a beautiful Hermiatge nose, resolved tannins and nice complexity. That two hours of air gave it flesh and revealed its depth - decanting is essential.
A tray of assorted cheeses from Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge was accompanied by the 2001 Knoll, Riesling Schutt, which was so rich and viscous I can see people finding it too much. One of those 'add water and get wine' deals - still a honeyed, deep riesling that needs time to become anything but a young and almost overwhelming wine.
Grilled chicken and Caesar salad is one of my favorite suppers so we got one of my favorite wines out; the 2006 Overnoy, Arbois-Pupillin rouge. Showed lighter and more elegant than previous bottles but still an intense, ripe and nuanced poulsard. Fantastic with the meal and still an idiosyncratic, "of the earth" experience. I love this wine.
Best, Jim
