Orthogneiss

What does that mean? Toothy gneiss? This 05 Domaine L'Ecu is not a happy wine. It either needs another several years or raw scallops....neither of which are available at the moment. There is a core of muscadetic music in the middle of the wine which taunts with chardonnay like notes, but it's wrapped tightly with a layer of stemmy tannins that constantly push one away. Curious, but ultimately a wine in transit more than resolved.

Orthogneiss designates a gneiss derived from an igneous rock, and paragneiss is one from a sedimentary rock.

...sez Wikipedia.

......further wikiness shows ortho means "straight or correct", and photos of those igneous rock visually bear that out....not that any of this edumacation makes the wine taste any better.
