The 2008 Rosi Schuster Sankt Laurent from Burgenland was a lovely summer beverage. For people who complain about how hard it is to get good inexpensive Pinot, maybe they should gave a glass of this and shutup. Me included. What a nose of baking spices, cooling minerals and a clean, damp, soil-driven wet earth quality. There is also a lovely purity to the nose. Expressive yet not pushed. Palate has a lovely texture. Plush and soft but with a nice edgy cranberry-like bitterness. Minimal tannins that whisper but are not moot.
The 2008 Moric Blaufrankisch really impressed me. This estate, in my minimal dealings, has always impressed. What a nose. Intricately detailed but a slight confectionary note and oodles and oodles of berries (or O's.) Some lovely spice, mint and a slight hint of jam. Just a tease of jam and in no way jammy. Just a component of the aromatic spectrum. The palate was plush, as entry level Blau gets that way, but with some nice ripe sweet tannins, and a lovely weightless quality. Good acids frame the very pretty fruit.
