Drinking the Luis Pato "Vinho Espumante." Good stuff, just as Eden promised. Good match with a frittata with mild green olives and red bell pepper.

Had the 2001 Chandon de Briailles Ile-de-Vergelesses yesterday. Very tight; will not open another for at least 3 years.

Further experimentation with the La Biancara "Pico" 2006 is leading me to believe that this wine is best served very cold. Either that, or the even-numbered bottles from a case are the best ones.

I can see that.

I had a 2002 CdB IdV a few weeks ago that was drinking pretty well. Nothing difficult about it and lots of pleasure, although sure it will develop more.

I'd been opening a few different 2002 Burgundies and there was a wide range of showings, depending on cuvee/structure, etc. I'm sure the 02 will last and 'improve', but it was fun now. Will see how long I hold my last bottle.

01s from Chandon de Briailles?

There are so many variables involved in these discussions but given the fact that 01 was leaner for Chandon de Briailles, I can see the extra fruit in the middle helping their 02s show better now (in addition to the fact that their 02s were not as tannic as the extra fruit-extra tannin 05s).
 
In the more general question of '02s I've have very mixed experiences. Some have been shut down hard (don't touch Lafarge CdeC!) others have been pretty generous. Haven't been able to suss out any common factors between either category.

Yeah earlier, like when they first came out, but not now. I think the 01's are more open than the 02's right now. Depending on cru, of course.

That's been my experience too, very generally speaking. Perhaps CdB are different.
 
I haven't had many recent 01's. This was sort of a weather balloon to see if I wanted to open more in the near future, based on all the buzz about the vintage drinking well now. Certainly my Briailles Volnay-Caillerets drank well a couple of years ago, but I don't think I'll open any of my other 01 Cote de Beaunes soon. Maybe I'll try a Cote de Nuits wine too.
