1983 Chteau Tayac Margaux
Not my usual kind of wine. Brought over as a gift from someone who found it in their strange cellar. So I was expecting vinegar but it did much better than that. Pretty dark plummy fruit and good gravelly tannins providing some semblance of structure. But for the most part it is resolved, mellow, mature, not very complex, but I wish there were more people around because then I might have actually finished the bottle. As it was, it was sitting heavy in my stomach and I was bored, so I moved on to:

2007 Domaine de Bellivire Jasnires Les Rosiers
Intense rich juicy tingly mineral fruit. Maybe a bit too intense and oversized (is all this tropical-ness from the oak?) for me right now, but it is certainly attractive and I guess I shouldnt expect too much elegance from this bottling.

2006 Jacques Puffeney Arbois Poulsard M
Love this wine. And you probably do too. Diamond crystal pale trembling silky fragrant Jolly Rancher (strawberry, rhubarb, raspberry, all depends when you sip) goodness. A bit of earth in the middle but such a delicate yet vibrant flavor frame of a wine. Must buy more to investigate these pleasures further.

2007 Ca de Noci Bianco Querciole
We all know the deal. Yeasty and beery but delicious and different (at least to those of us who don't drink this stuff all the time). Fun. Seemed to need air to stretch out so I guess it is only beginning?

2007 Edmunds St. John That Old Black Magic
All that is right and good with California wine. I may not drink enough of the stuff to be up to date on all the latest developments, but I can't contain my happiness while drinking this warm rich gripping strapping savory easy mouthful of a bottle. Goes perfectly with chickpeas in a roasted tomato sauce and I keep opening it for casual wine drinkers trying to convert them to the ESJ Ways. Works so far.

Rashann, was the Bellivire Jasnires sec?

It's definitely not labeled as sec and I believe there is some residual sugar most years. Of course I forget the precise rules for how much RS can be in a sec, so am not sure if it qualifies or not.

Beyond that, it's not a steely crisp wine but it's not really a juicy demi-sec either. Maybe rich sec or sec tendre. I don't know.

What I find most interesting is both non-wine geeks and Europhilic wine geeks love this wine.

I'd be curious as to how Calcentric wine geeks feel but I don't think they generally try it.

Yes, although I was just thinking last night that it is pretty darn rich and doesn't have the same "potentially problematic" (for some palates) acid spine that some of his syrahs do. But yet it is rich in a good way, so I'm happy too.

Does JBL have another name?
I know, you know Jason Brandt Lewis. Actually saw him on the 4th of July at a friend's home for barbeque etc in St Helena. We took Brad Kane with us and we still are waiting to see if we'll get invited back. Karen MacNeil was there as usual and I avoided an arguement about wine with her as per usual. Brad spent some time talking with her and said she was charming. JBL has the same opinion as I do and avoids discussions pertaining to wine when she's around.

Does he have a marital interest in wines from the region?

Is this a stupid 20 Questions game?

No and only if you want it to be. (winky emoticon)

That person is Wes Barton.

Damn, and here I thought that you were talking about Lou [insert emoticon of choice here]

Mark Lipton

That person is Wes Barton.
Oh, you mean the guy that's petulantly whining that Alice Feiring has ruined the entire market for California wine by saying mean things in one book and occasionally on a blog?* That Wes Barton?

I'll have to take your word for that as my eyes began to glaze over while wading through that thread. He's pretty even-tempered and soft-spoken in person.

No doubt, and that was my usual experience of Mr. Barton. But honestly, the spectacle of everyone whining about how mean and destructive this one tiny redhead is to their entire way of life...well, it's amusing.

But don't read the thread. It's the opposite of enlightening.

Any brett issues?
