today it was incredibly hot. i needed coffee before the baseball game - thanks sk! so i went to avalon. on wan bike.

a03.jpg
it was hot enough to keep blacktop happy

except for comerica park, avalon, slows, and xochimilco, detroit was empty.

monday july 5th is a holiday.

later i would serve an incredibly individualized throng on slows patio. (no photos. sorry.) but for now it was just me, my bike and my lens.

i swear, there is no better breakfast than a small baked egg sandwich with guatemalan drip brew at avalon. please weigh that against detroit drinks' other nominal favorite breakfasts: taste our goods, the fly trap, mike's famous ham place, and
zingerman's

orioles sing the most beautiful birdsong we've ever heard. i hope the tiger crushes them quickly.

yay. it's a scorcher. your detroit drinks correspondent is broiled like a lobster.

first two innings: all bats. the game is an hour and a half old before the the third inning. it is literally over 100 degrees F.

at this point, tasty hot dogs are in order. last night, dd had in-fucking-credible wagyu franks with mustard microgreens and home-did beet/turnip slaw, delicious thing. (the wine was all wrong - pepiere muscadet - should have gone with crb sauvignon!) today it would be national kosher frank with yellow mustard and some kind of chicago-style thing, with poppyseeds.

a12.jpg
as adorable as my favorite, the mustard dog, is, we must bow down to the poppy plant, and its seeds. yes no?

a13.jpg
eventually, this bell's oberon would be mixed with magical lemonade from the elephant ear/lemonade concessioneer, in the court across from section 121. i do believe the two beverages improved each other, but only with enough ice for catalyst.

a14.jpg
a15.jpg
lovely ladies were everywhere. they were melting like everyone else.

a16.jpg
water, $4. lemonade, $3.50.

this is not "the lemonade" - this is the "frozen lemonade desert" - very different.

a17.jpg
sensible people with kidneys to care for could be found on the shaded promenade, even during game play.

a18.jpg
i had to go. time for work. the game was incredible fun. i saw a fat kid get burned down his back with a foul ball off ordonez' bat. when he realized he had gained a ball to take home, the smile on his face was so expansive it filled up the stadium and it even infected the upper deck seats with superfluous warmth.

almost home

I was surprised to see Del's lemonade (a RI staple) for sale now in Tim Horton's. The world is indeed becoming a smaller place.
