By dint of disguising myself as someone who knows something about wine I was able to sneak into a subcomittee meeting of the ssb. Members in attendance were the Director, the Lawyer and the Liquidator. Unfortunately it seemed to be the World Cup subcomittee but at least I got the chance to try:
NV Ulysses Collin RM-28860-01 - surprisingly mature, rich, complex and delicious. Very white Burgundian. Anyone able to decipher the numbers to let us know what release it was?
2000 Dauvissat Chablis 'La Forest' - Not bad but not showing very Chablis-like. A little short on the minerals and chalk. I certainly wouldn't pay the going price.
1985 LdH Tondonia Riserva White - unfortunately over the hill. I have fond memories of this from a party at my old place about 8? years ago or so.
1993 Rollin Pernand-Vergelesses - everyone else liked this much more than I did. On the black fruit side of things, a touch of overripe fruit to my palate (but no one else's). I loved the first bottle of this but have been disappointed by the last two.
2001 Muller Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spatlese - no I didn't bring it. It was apparently a parting gift to the Liquidator when Mr. Connell departed for cooler climes. It's showing as well as ever with peaches and loads of passion fruit. The grapefruit comes out in force later. Love this wine.
1993 Zilliken Forstmeister Geltz Saarbruger Rausch Riesling Spatlese - a lovely mature riesling.
1970 Montrose - Very, very nice. Pure red fruit, beautiful nose. I was saving this for the next time I crossed paths with the Lawyer having missed opening it at his 40th earlier this year (though apparently there was another in attendance). While drinking it I was required to counter the vile canard that I don't like Bordeaux. Who knows how these rumors get started? Personally, I blame the new guy.
1996 Roumier Chambolle Musigny - I took not a single note but liked it very much nonetheless. Could certainly use more time (or more air).
