So in my post-Lebron Miami depression, which I knew was gonna happen, but denied it, I popped my first Cornelissen wine. The NV VdT (Etna Rosso) Contadino 6 was the wine I picked up from CSW today. Good to see old friends. But all that sentiment I can save for my blog.
All the warnings I got from people about how to approach it kind of scared me. Rimmerman's write-ups scared me and confounded me too. But of course intrigued me like only Jon can. I thought I'd have to hire a play by play taster the amount this wine was going to change.
Oh and David Lillie said it smelt and tasted like rubber. No one at CSW could give me any hint of what I was going to expect. We were all talking about Lebron anyway. Well not with David. It was a natural wine jam session the likes I haven't had in a very long time. I do miss those. D-Lills is perhaps one of the greatest people to talk wine with.
Well here goes nothing. I like it. Very much. The nose is pretty cool. I have it in a Ravenscroft Burgundy glass - deluxe bling bling edition and the aromas are filling the glass and my nose. Menthol, tar, sawdust, light cherry, some nuttiness. All of it really blending and harmonious. A warm, inviting smell. Like the smell of a fireplace out in the woods inviting. Not that smell. But that vibe. The wine feels like an old pair of shoes I haven't worn in a long time that seem new again. There is a familiarity to the aromas yet there is a newness that is fascinating. The purity, edginess, and the balance, wow the balance are quite something. There's bright, focused red fruits that command your attention, along with great zippy acids. The feeling of freshness is almost overwhelming. It clings and stays with you for a while. The structure is wonderful with sweet tannins and a wonderful hierarchy of flavor on the palate. It is amazing how long it stays in your mouth, just whispering.
Very impressive. Will be buying the Munjebel red tomorrow that CSW has. I am hooked. Goodbye Lebron. Hello Frank.
