Goodbye Lebron. Hello Frank.

So in my post-Lebron Miami depression, which I knew was gonna happen, but denied it, I popped my first Cornelissen wine. The NV VdT (Etna Rosso) Contadino 6 was the wine I picked up from CSW today. Good to see old friends. But all that sentiment I can save for my blog.

All the warnings I got from people about how to approach it kind of scared me. Rimmerman's write-ups scared me and confounded me too. But of course intrigued me like only Jon can. I thought I'd have to hire a play by play taster the amount this wine was going to change.

Oh and David Lillie said it smelt and tasted like rubber. No one at CSW could give me any hint of what I was going to expect. We were all talking about Lebron anyway. Well not with David. It was a natural wine jam session the likes I haven't had in a very long time. I do miss those. D-Lills is perhaps one of the greatest people to talk wine with.

Well here goes nothing. I like it. Very much. The nose is pretty cool. I have it in a Ravenscroft Burgundy glass - deluxe bling bling edition and the aromas are filling the glass and my nose. Menthol, tar, sawdust, light cherry, some nuttiness. All of it really blending and harmonious. A warm, inviting smell. Like the smell of a fireplace out in the woods inviting. Not that smell. But that vibe. The wine feels like an old pair of shoes I haven't worn in a long time that seem new again. There is a familiarity to the aromas yet there is a newness that is fascinating. The purity, edginess, and the balance, wow the balance are quite something. There's bright, focused red fruits that command your attention, along with great zippy acids. The feeling of freshness is almost overwhelming. It clings and stays with you for a while. The structure is wonderful with sweet tannins and a wonderful hierarchy of flavor on the palate. It is amazing how long it stays in your mouth, just whispering.

Very impressive. Will be buying the Munjebel red tomorrow that CSW has. I am hooked. Goodbye Lebron. Hello Frank.

Lillie is for sure underrated. David Lillie is better at what he does than Lebron is at what we does. I'll give you that.

Ok, the guy can play. Most domiinating player in the regular season. Should win many championships, but championship rings so far? Ohio state 4A high school ring? I am not mistaking him for Magic, Bird, or Jordan just yet.

Jordan never got a ring till year 7. And then we all know what happened. I think he'll get his rings now. Imagine if Beasley actually fulfills his potential.

Jordan got one at UNC. College counts. High school doesn't.

Yea but Lebron never went to college. I say if he wins 8 rings he will be better than Jordan. He needs to get on it now though.

Joel,

Changing even more now. More nuttiness on the nose, and a kind of Lagrein-like woodland berry character. Also I think I prefer it at cellar temp.

Wade is clutch, but I'd take Gasol-Rondo over Wade-James to start my NBA team. Question is how we get Pau to Boston.

And how do we get Carmelo and Chris Paul to New York? Lots of questions. Well we can watch baseball and drink Cornelissen in the meantime. That's my plan.

What, Jermaine O'Neal isn't good enough for you?

Well, not exactly bad news.

I am the anti-VS, long-time Lakers fan turned celtics fan by Kobe and Rondo. Still, Rajan could use gasol in the post.

Well, there goes the Beasley-as-teammate idea.

I'm all for idiosyncratic wines, natural winemaking and people doing their own thing. I'm a fan of Puffeney, Lopez de Heredia, Gravner, Bea and more.

That said, the (now 4 different) Cornelissen wines I've had have been so mindbogglingly poorly made and so thoroughly flawed that they couldn't be swallowed. Even if you're into wines with crazy alcohol, no body and raging green streaks and into a winemaker that doesn't know how to rack, I had a hard time getting past VAs that are 2.5 times or more the threshhold of perception, 1.5 times or more the legally mandated limit, and enough to make the wines honestly the worst I've ever had.

But to each their own and I'm absolutely certain there is wild bottle variation out there so I can't and won't comment on the bottles others have had. But this is a producer I'm done with.
