What is really value?

In this case, 05 Bouchard, drunk out of fear of premox, bought at close out pricing, represents a straight up fucking stellar bottle of wine for the price...

On the flip side the de Villaine looks like a Kermit Lynch and Villaine effort that trades on name and isn't worth anywhere near what it cost. But that doesn't mean it wasn't still enjoyable despite the poor QPR...

2005 Bouchard Pre et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrires

Essentially just delicious. A touch ripe in keeping with 05. But still quite pure and focused. Oak perfectly integrated, not sticking out at all. Oily and nutty and hints of tropical fruit but still bright and fresh. Effortless, perfectly balanced and quite long. Still youthful and undoubtedly better in 5 years but perfectly enjoyable now. Even drunken now under the specter of premox, this is a great wine at a fair price and this was a very easy bottle to drain.

2008 A. et P. de Villaine Bourgogne La Digoine

This is a great wine if you don't mind thin. Looked at another way, this has a knockout nose that combines crunchy, super bright red fruit with a mineral note that essentially calls to mind Beaujolais. The (lack of) color calls Beaujo to mind as well, for better or worse ;) After an hour or two of air the palate knits together but it still lacks weight. A good wine, and an enjoyable wine to be honest. But far from a wine that is worth $30+, there is a long list of better Beaujolais, Arbois and Jura for 1/2 to 2/3 the price. However I'd still rather drink a perfectly enjoyable if light wine that is a questionable value than an ultimately flawed or unenjoyable wine and thus can't be disappointed in this purchase. I guess if I'd bought a case rather than a bottle I'd be very disappointed.

I haven't had the 08 La Digoine, and it wasn't an easy vintage, but have you had previous vintages? They were definitely underpriced and offered great value for the amount of enjoyment, IMHO.

I have not had this vintage.
But "thin" has never been a problem for me; thick, OTOH . . .
As a rule, I find this cuvee light bodied but quite fresh and enjoyable. I also find that it ages pretty well, at least in the medium term. And other vintages of this label have been everything that I could want in village Burgundy.
But your comments intrigue so I will have to find a bottle.
Best, Jim

I certainly expect more out of M-G Vosne or Roumier Chambolle! And while I might not expect more out of a humble bourgogne rouge, I also expect more out of a $32 bottle of Burgundy. That kind of scratch buys a bottle of Burguet Tradition, Bachelet CdNV, etc...

However, it is certainly a well made wine. I will have to check these out in 09 assuming pricing is comparable.

Perhaps. But it doesn't buy M-G Vosne or Roumier Chambolle.

Either way, this shows the danger of leaping to conclusions based on one bottle. And even if they somehow flubbed the vintage, the history of this wine is far from something that trades on the names of Kermit and de Villaine to inflate prices.

Fair enough - I still have my opinion on this one bottle though like I said, I'll be happy to give them another try in 09...
