Quick notes

originally posted by Jay Miller: And of course I don't know how I can reconcile my lack of enthusiasm for grenache with my love for the 2007 That Old Black Magic. Fortunately I feel no need to do so :).

The 07 is only 29% grenache. That helps. (I didn't like the 06 - with more grenache - as much).

Does one wish to be "totally lucid?"

Jay, the over-ripe syrah theory is plausible and one I had not considered.
Be that as it may, I think 'great' grenache is an exception to the rule, thereby proving the rule's existence - at least in my house.
And, if I remember correctly, the 2006 That Old Black Magic is a 50-50 blend - or close to that. In any event, I like it, too. (wonder what Maureen thinks of it?).
Best, Jim

Hank,
Again, the exceptions only go to prove that grenache has to be exceptional to be worth it.
Or, at least, that's my theory.
Best, Jim

Rayas is still grenache. If Rayas could make that quality of wine from grenache other people could do it also if they knew how. I have problems with your theory.

I have to admit I haven't explored the Southern Rhone much at all because of the price and the fact that there are so many awful wines. Who would you recommend?

L'Anglore, Richaud, Gramenon, Elodie Balme, etc. Come on, Cory?

Gramenon makes a Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Syrah that's supposed to be good.

Not to pick on you, Ian, but recommending a wine you haven't had?

For what it's worth, the Gramenon lineup is awesome.

Yeah, the southern Kreydenweiss wines are definitely worth a look.

Dunno. I find them rather boring.

Pick at will, but I was just naming a southern Rhone, Syrah-based wine apropos Jim's comment.

S. Rhone makes some excellent wines and some awful wines. They get about equal publicity, thanks to The Evictor (as he is apparently known to some folks).

Grenache is great where it does great. You have to put it in the right terroir. Chteau Rayas, L'Ermita (famous): great grenache. Espectacle, La Via Escondida (not so famous): great grenache.
