Gail and I were at Palena last month and enjoyed it very much. I would also put in a vote for Peter Pastan's Obelisk, which used to get more buzz, but which is still as good as it used to be.

Since rumors abound that Obelisk will be closing ....

More info please??? If Obelisk were to close, I would literally lose the last positive food link to my childhood and youth in DC. It is the only place i look forward to when i find out i have to be in DC....

Ditto on what everyone else said about Obelisk.

One place we recently tried for the first time was Buck's Fishing and Camping, a mile to two up Conn. Ave. from Palena and next to Politics & Prose. I thought the food was quite good and reasonably priced, the atmosphere was nice, and the wine list was awesome for D.C. -- had a Peillot Bugey Mondeuse that was outstanding.

miracles are possibleupdate: Jean has assented to give Obelisk a try, largely on the basis of your enthusiasm.

I have to admit Thor has never given me a bum steer on a restaurant. The two of us were the first ones to bitch that the Slanted Door wasn't what it used to be. We did receive flack for that judgment but I heard that Ellenbogen has bailed from SD also. The new guy has promised wines for everybody, whoopee, we'll be able to get Mondavi, Kendall Jackson and all that good sh-- that I've missed with Ellenbogen.

I'll try harder next time, Lou. Have you heard about this new Cracker Barrel place? I hear they specialize in cheese...

But wait...Mark has left the Slanted Door?

Gone.

The money quote: "Einbund is well aware that the Slanted Door already has a great wine program, but he wants to reignite it and expand it further into the accessible realm."

So what Lou said.
