Reunion d'Orange

would have loved to make this but alas, fridays are nearly impossible to be out of the shop for. Next time. Maybe ill send a bottle along with anyone that makes it down from the Bean Town Contingent (BTC).

alla prossima volta...

We are supposed to be in NY Oct 5th through the 12th, the good Wizard willing and the crik don't rise. Put us down for two if they allow older more reserved wine geeks. Having us come into town from Napa to attend your event would give it a little panache.

Good times.

Dinner will consist of canapes and then 3 savory courses followed by cheese. Menu to be announced soon. The pricing per person is $125/person if that person brings a bottle of Orange wine with them to share with the group, $195/person without said bottle. Contributions can be Orange from anywhere. I focused on Italy in terms of the wines above. Others may want to try something from elsewhere. I've personally been aiming for more current releases, to sort of provide an Orange One Year On kind of survey. Sampling what has been released in the interim since the last dinner.

There will be a form for people to fill out indicating basic information like phone number, CC#, number of guests attending and such, but I am ridiculously tired right now, and the form isn't done yet.

There are seats if you are reading this and you would like to come. Just message me and we'll pencil you in. We'll max out at 20, this thing isn't going to be too big.

There is plenty of wine.

Apologies for the spamnation.

Y'all enjoy.

Interested to see if the Lunar shows as well as it did the last time. That was the big surprise for me.

I was just having a conversation about orange wines last night and my raconteur said that he loved them but they didn't go with food. Nonesense, said I. I think people too often serve them with "white wine" dishes. They need meat, like rabbit, pork, or veal. Actually, Jakot with simple roast chicken is the shit.

I actually enjoyed a Radikon Jakot with a porterhouse. Blasphemy, I know.

They go with a lot of things. But not, as VLM says, "white wine" dishes unless they're already vetted (Friulian bean soups, for example); I find a decent rule of thumb is if they'd go with a good ribolla, with its wax and weight, they'll probably go with an orange wine. But that's "probably," not "will."

Let me again recommend the absolute brilliance of orange wines with the cheese course. They do better than any other single wine in matching, cutting, emphasizing, or battling a wide range of styles. Still not 100% useful (the goat and her milk still stand apart), but the other benefit is that they don't suffer after the reds that, theoretically, preceded them.

I'm bummed I'm going to miss this, but I'll be at a pig-picking in Northern Virginia (www.oinkdc.com). My ex-roomie runs it and we're going to be doing a 24-hour slow roast of a 280-pound pig, bluegrass, and lots of beer.

I may have to pick up some Radikon RG for it in honor of the Orangeness.

As it so happens, I'll be at a pig-pickin' on the Eno river in Hillsborough, NC. This is an annual one thrown by my godmother. Don't think there will be any orange wines there, but they'd be great, I bet. Maybe I'll grab a Radikon to try.

Put me down + one, please.

Great news.

You bringing Darondo?

I would but he only drinks Champagne...although I think he would like Camilo Donati.

Yuck! Love the Donati Lambrusco and love Orange wines but the Camillo Donati Malvasia Frizzante Secco tasted like sparkling Aftershave. Truly gross. A crime against nature.

Certain folks have let me know what they will be bringing along for the Reunion.

So far that list consists of:

2004 Radikon Ribolla Gialla, Friuli, Italy

2002 Gravner "Breg", Friuli, Italy

2007 Gualandi "Vinum", Toscana, Italy

2004 Paolo Bea "Arboreus", Umbria, Italy

2007 Il Tufiello "Don Chisciotte" Fiano, Campania, Italy

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Bianco 4, Sicilia, Italy

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Bianco 6, Sicilia, Italy

Most updates will be posted as they become available.

I guess I'll have to give aftershave a try now. Camillo Donati Malvasia Frizzante Secco is one of my favorite wines in all the world.

Different strokes.
