2007 Clos Roche Blanche Gamay

I'm pretty sure this was brought up recently here, but the '04 Cot is fantastic right now. Maybe it is so good because it has a little Malbec mixed in with the Cot?

Another drink and/or hold wine.
Actually the blend is a straight 50/50 Cot/Malbec. Drink and hold.

The 2004 Pif was drinking brilliantly up until we depleted the local stock a month or two past. I'd like to find some more of that.

I think there's some Auxerrois in there as well.

Yes. 50% Cot, 50% Malbec, 50% Auxerrois. Although it has a smidgeon of these thrown in for good measure:

Agreste, Auxerrois De Laquenexy, Auxerrois Des Moines De Picpus, Auxerrois Du Mans, Balouzat, Beran, Blanc De Kienzheim, Cahors, Calarin, Cauli, Costa Rosa, Cot A Queue Verte, Cotes Rouges, Doux Noir, Estrangey, Gourdaux, Grelot De Tours, Grifforin, Guillan, Hourcat, Jacobain, Luckens, Magret, Malbek, Medoc Noir, Mouranne, Navarien, Negre De Prechac, Negrera, Noir De Chartres, Noir De Pressac, Noir Doux, Nyar De Presak, Parde, Perigord, Pied De Perdrix, Pied Noir, Pied Rouge, Pied Rouget, Piperdy, Plant D'Arles, Plant De Meraou, Plant Du Roi, Prechat, Pressac, Prunieral, Quercy, Queue Rouge, Quille De Coy, Romieu, Teinturin, Terranis, Vesparo,[9] Ct, Plant du Lot.

I opened my AoE #79 today to find Alice Feiring waxing eloquently about Clos Roche Blanche Cuvee Cot.

"Catherine Roussel's great grandfather planted the Cot vines in 1894. She calls them the old ladies, and its easy to see why, especially in January when their expressively wise, gnarled, wintry hands seem to reach from the wood. The soil is flecked with bonelike yellow stones of tuffeau, the limestone that gives the wine its compelling chalkiness. To see the vines and sip the Cot is to understand the profound link of the taste to the terroir..."

2008 Art of Eating #79
pg 34.

Beautiful write up Alice.

I loved the '05 Cot, but not so much the '06 (I was also underwhelmed by the '06 Cabernet after the '05). I can see how those with palates more similar to Jay's (especially in terms of ripeness levels) might actually prefer the '06.

The Sauvignon Blanc is such a no brainer, it ridiculous. I haven't tried the '07 Gamay, although I would have if Jay hadn't hogged every last bottle in NYC.

Astor still has some. I found it when I went there during their Tuesday Tuscan sale this week. I suspect lugging mags of Montevertine around may have contributed to my back going out the next day.

Enjoyed my tastes of the 06 Cot. All about structure at this point. Hoping it'll even out in a few years.

Drinking an '06 today, not as impressive as the '07. Half a day of air has helped quell the sweet ripeness of fruit a bit, much to its benefit.

Are you still holding/drinking any bottles of the 02?

I saw a note elsewhere that it had shed the dreaded geranium notes and become a delightfully 'mature' bottle of wine.

No, I went through a case of it with the last bottles being the best but the last was about 2 years ago.

And of course no one on the east coast got to try the '01. Not that I'm bitter or anything...

On this recommendation, I picked up a bottle on the way home from work and constructively arranged for roast chicken for dinner. I must say, well played Mr. Miller. I really enjoyed this bottle, which most likely would have remained overlooked given my dissatisfaction with the 2006. It showed great Gamay character, which is of course a mixed blessing. The fruit lacked a bit of clarity, but it made up for it with a sense of earnestness and purpose. The two things that defined it for me and guaranteed a future purchase were the refreshing acidity and the appealing spiciness to the back half of the wine. I wonder whether the fruit will come into focus more with a little bottle age, especially given the acidity.

To indulge in a dreaded vintage generalization I'll say that 2007 is much more to my taste in the Loire than 2006.

Hopefully I won't find the politburo waiting for me when I get home.

The 2003 CRB Gamay is still a little atypical, but better than when I last had it a year ago.

The '03 CRB reds were surprisingly good. I didn't lay any down which was probably a mistake as I had them pegged as drink early and enjoy.
