Burgundy Advice?

Rahsaan
Am looking to buy a bottle of Burgundy that is slightly above my usual price range so am wondering if anyone has insight on which of these might be likely to show well and be a nice bottle of wine in two weeks time.

I realize that even though this is above my usual price range, it is not quite up into Mindblowing Burgundy Range, so I'm not expecting life-altering fireworks.

But, a good bottle of pleasure would be nice.

95 Maume Charmes Chambertin
00 B Clair Clos St Jacques
02 S Esmonin Santenots
04 Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot

The Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot was a most pleasurable wine last year (not sure how you feel about the comparability of '99 to '04.. I might think they are fairly close together).. other Bruno Clair wines from 2000 have been good but not ground breaking..no experience with the Clos St. Jacques..

Just my $0.02 (now valued at $0.0002 after the past 2 week's events)

Thanks for the response but I am not sure I follow the logic here? The vintages are very different in character and in many cases should be showing very differently right now. No?

I do appreciate that HN should make 'good' CV regardless of vintage, but ideally would like a little more info on drinkability before spending the money..

I've got to admit I'm not jazzed about any of the choices as a "big splurge" to drink in two weeks. I haven't had any of these wines recently, I'm just sayin'.....(sorry for the ......).

Fair enough.

Useful feedback. I can always go in other directions based on the limitations of what's available.

where are you purchasing?

If Bassin's, there are better choices in the same price range.

If these are the choices, I'd go with the Clair, with reservations, but far ahead of the competition.

Recent HN for me is a bit OTT.

Sorry to hear that. I read something about change in personnel in 04 or 05.

Yes.

Anything specific come to mind?

I'm just a Burgundy wanna-be who has not tasted any of these particular wines, so my opinion is quite useless.

That said, this would be my pick. Although I don't expect that it is quite ready.

From Bassin's, they are listing a 1995 Geantet Charmes for $100. This is well worth the extra $20 over the Clair, IMO. 1995s are drinking really well right now, and I've found this to be a particularly successful vintage/wine from Geantet.

There is also a 1995 Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin Aux Velles, again assuming good condition, I've had very good experiences with Mortet in 1995, not so much afterwards. And it is $60.

It also looks like they have a 1996 Maume Mazis which I would choose over the Charmes, see also other thread on this subject.

You also might want to consider taking a flyer on an older Laurent wine in the name of science. The 1995 Clos St. Jacques, say. You know, for the good of humanity.

Yeah, I'm hardly a H-N expert, but I'd tend to agree.

Which ones are you referring to?

I can't comment on the 1er or grand cru wines, but the 02 HN Vosne Romanee (the straight village wine) was very enjoyable, and I thought a great value. The 02 HN Bourgogne was the opposite of what I think of as being over the top. If anything it was leaning towards the unripe green side and not enjoyable, but for different reasons. Both were closed pretty tight at last check.

'02 is not "recent." The winemaking changed in '03 or '04.
