A few Burgundies and Rieslings

From memory so please take these with a grain of salt. Actually, that sounds like an appalling combination. Take it with a mild degree of skepticism.

2000 Potel Clos Vougeot

Started out a bit too thick and rich but with air it gradually blossomed (density declined as the volume expanded) becoming a regal complex Burgundy with a gorgeous nose.

1993 de Courcel Pommand 'Rugiens'

Followed a reverse trajectory. Started out with beautiful aromatics and a precise complex palate but then gradually shut down. Useful to have both at the same dinner.

1998 Muller Catoir Haardter Burgergarten Riesling Spatlese

My last bottle and it certainly went out with a bang. Intense, vibrant, as thrilling as it was the day I first tried it at a Terry Thiese new release tasting. Was that really 10 years ago?

2001 Muller Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spatlese

Fantastic showing as always. Like a tropical fruit coated grapefruit ice pick through the palate. Kaleidoscopic.

There were other wines including a lovely 2004 Truchot MSD VV which showed no green to my (admittedly relatively green-insensitive) palate. The old Zillikens were nice but not thrilling.

Dinner with Salil?

I love those 2004 Truchot wines. I had one bottle of MSD Blanchards that was less than lovely, but everythng else has been delicious.

Glad to see the '98 Catoir going so well. I have a few left, though not as many as I would like.

Encuragin report on the '01 Scheurebe. I had one in early August that was very bitter, much like unripe grapefrut pith with none of your tropical glaze. It really needed the tropical glaze, as it was painful without it.

Well detected!

The grapefruit was certainly more prominent than the tropical fruit in this bottle (unlike the last one Salil opened when I was around).

This is the only '04 Truchot I've had (though this is my second encounter). If only he had been immortal. Or at least young enough to keep making wine while I was young enough to keep drinking it.

We had some very nice wines. That '01 Scheu really is phenomenal, glad I still have a couple more (though I don't know how long I can keep my hands off other bottles given how that one showed).

I don't think anyone found much green on the Truchot.

I loved the Burgergarten as well - and don't forget the '01 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Auslese, which I thought was incredibly elegant and refreshing, if very young.
