'02 Baumard Savennires Clos du Papillon

2002 Domaine des Baumard Savennires Clos du Papillon, alc 13%....nose is delicate with lemon peel and a floral element...the palate is equally delicate with a gentle citrus and acacia type of flavor...it dances across the palate and actually intensifies as it warms in the mouth...the acid is a bit subdued and the finish is soft and diffuse...very nice "gentle" wine...not sure about it's longevity potential
 
I've had very few positive outcomes from aging Baumard Savennires.

Let me caveat that by saying that I've had fewer positive outcomes than others from aging any Savennires, on which subject you should follow the lead of someone like Kay Bixler. But Baumard has not rewarded aging (from this appellation; others have produced occasionally splendid results).

Well, judging by the CT notes, it still has some fruit left in it. I think I should wait till it's all gone and the wine tastes oxidized. That way, I can pretend I'm drinking sherry and kill two birds with one stone.

Fwiw, the '79 Clos Papillon from Baumard is one of the best Savennieres I've ever had. A '59 Coulee de Serrant some of us had at Connell's about 11 years ago was also stellar.

That said, I haven't been impressed with the way Baumard's Savennieres have been aging since about post '93, though some '97's have shown surprisingly well.
 
'97, specifically, is a vintage in which everything I cellared from that appellation turned to shit (and I don't use that word lightly). Beyond any reasonable likelihood of same, too. I have one bottle of -- here we're leaving Baumard's stable -- Isa left, which I will be happy to inflict on any visiting New Yorkers or lovers of '97 Savennires. Who knows? Maybe it'll be The Good Bottle.
 
I have '97 Closel Cuvee Speciale. Last bottle was gorgeous. I'm sure the next will be oxidized, but if it's good, it's really good.

'79 Baumard Papillon has been good but not otherworldly, though it's been some years since I last tried it.

I should check in on '02 Baumard Papillon, but I also have the '98 Papillon and wonder if anyone's had it recently?
