1993 Rollin Pere & Fils Pernand-Vergelesses

Jay Miller

Smooth and subtly luxurious.Haunting dusty nose and crushed strawberries totally devoid of candied or sour charry notes on the palate.

My bottles of this have been all over the place, this is perhaps my favorite to date.

I like sour charry, with all the ambiguity it invokes.

I can like, or even love, it too but this was beautiful in a different way.

I've been unhappy with some of these bottles but this one (and the first one I opened) were worth the price of the 8.

I've been following the saga of the case rapt with interest. We've chatted about Rollin before, and I am a fan. I suppose it would be too early to open an 02 Ile de Vergelesses ...

Yes.

But if you give in give it at least an hour of air. At least.

Didn't you open a good one of these in the cellar a while back?

Yes, that was the first (quite beautiful) bottle which I referenced. This one was even better.

But I've had several that seemed a touch ripe, sweet and dense to me. Completely unlike that bottle or this one.

Some 1998 Rollins I've opened recently have shown well with a lot of air.

I should amend my 2002 comment to say that I haven't had one since release so I'm basing my comment on a quick taste in the Rosenthal tasting room at that time. May 2002 Burgundies have been surprisingly ready to I suppose it's possible theirs are too.

I had a bottle earlier this summer that was very fun to drink for my tastes. Certainly not a crime to open.

Of course it will undoubtedly develop further and much of these calculations depend on storage conditions, personal tastes, personal stash, etc. But at least my bottle in June was far from an ugly/difficult/shutdown Burgundy. FWIW.

Yes, that was the one of fond memory, for which thanks.

It's no good hedging: I'll open one now, and if it isn't at its positive apogee of development, I'm going to hunt you down and make you drink cream sherry.

I love that word for red Burgundy. Especially with a bit of age. Not sure I use it for other wines. But it just seems to 'fit' so well.
I know what you mean. Something to do with the length and complexity plus a sense of decay that is somehow beautiful in aged Burgs. I've encountered it in a few aged domestic Pinot Noirs too, but Burgundy does it best.
