Don't fuck around - get your MMVII on

Scott Kraft

This is one of the most breathtaking wines you'll ever have. It has it all going on - even now. Who knows what the future holds but I could give a shit. Drink. And drink more.

Did you have it six months ago? I thought it was interesting and might have potential but at the time it was sort of mute. I wonder if it has opened up.

Of course, this is Lapierre we're talking about, so probably there is some bottle variation...

I'll try it this week, a previous bottle seemed closed (I hope).

Have some ready for my next west coast swing.

I'd have it on tap if I could.

No. But this bottle was definitely open.

Wow. I've had this twice in the last six months and hated both bottles.

Diff'rent strokes I guess.

Or given that it's Lapierre, probably diff'rent bottles.

Raj blinded us with this at RN74 a couple of months ago. Everyone thought it was hardcore Burgundy, not Beaujolais.

-Eden (then again, it was a night with a bunch of Syrah producers so it's not as if he expected anyone to nail it)

You're just a natural born hater, I guess. Especially now that you're old.

i think you might change your mind after the wine has spent a decade or more in the bottle. while i have never had the experience, i have been assure by some who have that the wine ages very well.

Yeah, well, haters gonna hate.

The wine reminded me of a Beaujolais inspired by California late-harvest Zinfandel. It was overdone, overripe, and very sweet. I didn't care for it at all, and neither did my dining companions on either occasion.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if there were fabulous bottles out there, though. I am a magnet for crappy bottles of Lapierre.

The one I had was nothing like what you describe.

I've had some really good bottles of this.
Sigh.

I've not had a good bottle of Lapierre in nearly a year now. The 2008 in particular for me was a total wash, save for the first bottle I drank which was very nice.

Maybe I should stop buying them at Kermit's store in Brzrkly.

Fortunately Foillard, Chamonard, Desvignes and G. Descombes continue to serve me well as far as Morgon goes.

My previous bottle of MMVII was only moderately good but the one I opened today was quite beautiful.

I've had this 6-8 times in the last 8 months (both in SF and here in NYC) and the bottles had ranged from sublime to merely very good (and if memory serves the sublime ones were from the early part of the year and were in or from SF). Last week, however, I opened a bottle (from crush, delivered several months ago) and it was wretched -- tasted of oak and and smelled of shoe polish; largely monolithic and heavy; unrecognizable to me; prior bottles from this same lot had been fine. I was thinking that it was just entering a bad phase and that I should leave the remaining bottles alone for 6-12 months, but now I wonder whether it was mere bottle variation ....

That's my feeling, I think it will be much better in 10...

So you think their winemaking technique will continue to improve?
