2007 Puffeney Pinot Noir

Salil Benegal

Opened with duck confit and potatoes roasted in duck fat. Fantastic Pinot somehow managing to show both a sense of rusticity and finessed elegance; combining fresh red and dark fruits with savoury earth, herbal and faint floral and funky elements. There's tremendous depth here, and yet it feels light as a feather with barely any sense of weight and tremendous complexity and presence. A wow wine for me, and I'm glad I have a few more.

Is this a different bottling than the one that just says Pinot Noir on the label? Did yours say "vieilles vignes" or is his Pinot always old vines?

I always thought the "vieilles vignes" designation was saved for the poulsard/trousseau/pinot noir blend.

this sounds incredible

gotta find a bottle

Tried tonight.
The initial impression is pretty lifted on the nose (maybe some VA?) but it blows off to become a wine of substance and character. There's a sort of face powder element in the nose and some real iron in the mouth; rustic probably covers it pretty well.
Lots of potential but a bit closed right now.
Good with steak.
Best, Jim

anyone have any thoughts on the 2008? I'm looking at rosenthal's price list for the Tabard - no 07 left (although the Poulsard M is available in the 07 vintage).

In the past week, I had three Puffeney wines.

The '06 Poulsard was very good, even if not Houillon-esque.

The mid-palate of the '07 Pinot Noir was elegant, beautiful pinot noir, as Salil says, but the bottle we drank had an odd lactic and swampy note on the finish that was distracting. YwinedistributionchainorbottlestabilityissuesMV?

The '07 Trousseau was outstanding, no off notes of any kind, and just as good on day two.
