This was my first bottle from a small stash of old ESJ ('86s and '87s) that I rescued from an abandoned pile of wine at my locker facility. Apparently the owner decided to sell his wine and sent everything that was deemed to be auction worthy off to sale. About 20 cases didn't make the cut and imagine my delight when I found five or six bottles of ESJ among cases of, inter alia, '80s Oregon pinot, Inglenook merlot, etc. My lucky day for sure.
This bottle was pristine with a neck fill and an absolutely perfect cork. I'm sure storage was great. Medium ruby in the glass with some bricking. Great nose with some smoke, tea, meat and a little pepper. The wine is starting to fade but just slightly. What a great acid structure and everything is in balance. Really tertiary at this point. Just a super bottle - especially considering the release price was around 10 bucks I imagine.
Steve, I believe I have another of these as well as some '86 and '87 syrah (can't remember the exact designation right now). If any are irreplaceable or if you'd like to have one back just let me know and I'd be happy to send it on.
