DC Restaurant recos?

Hello to the Beltwayers!

I have a few days in the Capitol next week. And a few dinners. Unfortunately, all client dinners. Great clients but no jeebus time.

Any advice on places to go that are (relatively) convenient to Dupont Circle?

Any news on the Tabard Inn? I used to love it back in the day.
 
Tabard is still very good - just attended a wedding there and the meal after was amazing - godme rose to start with passed things, 05 lamy st aubin les frionnes with excellent (and not very dairy-laden) lobster bisque, 08 huet le mont demi sec with arugula/pear/manchego cheese and then with the roasted turbot with corn ravioli and roasted hen of the woods mushrooms, followed by 06 bachelet cdnv with duck breast with lentils. Oh, and 01 muller catoir mussbacher eselhaut rieslaner with dessert!

ok, I selected those wines for the wedding - but the godme, bachelet, and muller catoir are on the regular list there.
 
Komi is supposed to be great, though reservations are probably going to be hard to come by. Several of my friends who have gone say its the best restaurant in DC.

And, yes, Tabard is still amazing.
 
i would also recommend: brassiere beck, michels, and corduroy. not sure if the locations work, but i have eaten and drank very well at all three.
 
Second Obelisk and Corduroy. Like Brasserie Beck, but obviously it's not a wine joint. Haven't been to most of the others.

Jeremiah Cohen, son of the original owners and the hotel's general manager, does most of the wine list selections. (I tasted him on that Huet and he loved it - I'm trying to convince him to invest in a couple of cases.) He often forwards wholesalers' lists to me and asks for my suggestions - but I'd say my choices are usually no more than 7-8 wines on the list at any one time. The hotel has an import permit and direct imports many wines from Italy too.

He asked me several years ago what he could do to improve the hotel's wine program. I suggested he install cooling units in his long-term wine holding space (he actually buys stuff and holds it for awhile - e.g., 01 donnhoff auslesen, 99 ponsot cdr and comte armand clos des epenaux) and units behind the bar to house red wines for immediate consumption (so that red wine is served at the proper temperature there) and purchase good stemware and decanters, all of which he did. He also pays for his staff to attend wine training courses outside the hotel.

Finally - his markup is very fair, I think.
 
Jeremiah was always a very decent guy; sounds like they've come a long way on the wine front since my day. Linda Toler used to pay for classes when she was GM - where I first got the bug.

Do they still import their own Italian wines and Hungarian Brandy?
