NWR: music

Sparklehorse, Band of horses, Midlake, Thomas Dybdahl, Lambchop, Neil young, Antony & The Johnsons, Anna von Hausswolff, Susanne Sundfr, Keith Jarrett (The melody at night, with you), Hope Sandoval, Radiohead, Vic Chesnutt, Bonnie Prince Billie, Jim White, Scud mountain boys, Midnight choir...etc. Just to name a few.

Sad to say, I haven't been buying much new music lately (or even hearing it). Last purchase was LCD Soundsystem, and I'm still listening to Sufjan Stevens's "Illinoise" while actively contemplating getting his long-awaited new album.

One of the songs from the new album is a free download on Amazon and it's really good.

I think there must be many and very diverse tastes in music on this board. I'd like to hear what you'd have playing in the background whilst pouring shared tastes such as Lapierre or Puzelat, etc.

JS Bach of course - but in the foreground, not background. I am unable to think of another composer (or decomposer since he's dead?) than JS Bach that would have such a huge range of emotions. Renaissance polyphony and Anton Webern are other favorites. As is some free/atonal jazz like Evan Parker (though is that very different from Webern?).

New Sufjan is great.

For pop, no US band has been better than The National the past few years. Sound is kinda dad-rock, though, so you need to get past that.

With tequila, try anything from Nacional records.

I've got Esquivel (!), Link Wray, Monk, Mingus, Bon Iver, Juana Molina, Fela, The Bamboos, Eric Dolphy, Chopin, Beastie Boys, Antipop Consortium, Tom Waits, Psapp, Gillian Welch, the Meters, and Blossom Dearie in the mix this week. My tastes are ..er.. eclectic though.

Webern is perfect for wine tasting, Otto. You can have a glass in between consecutive notes. No interference.

Well, much like wine, music is very much a matter of personal taste. When I saw your query, I thought to myself what would make me the happiest in terms of combining music and wine. For me I don't think it could get better to be in a place like Ten Bells (or another convivial place of choice) with friends, drinking a bottle of Lapierre Morgon and have some Black Flag come on the stereo. Or Mission Of Burma or anything off of Tender Prey by Nick Cave. It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it.

Now, I'd never throw those out as recommendations for most people to check out. I mean, I'll put on things like High on Fire and Mastodon and black metal like Nachtmystium, Darkthrone and Xasthur when I'm at home; by myself. Again, I'm not going to throw those out as music you should listen to. If we have people coming over to drink I'll put on something like Dungen (I also really like the new Tame Impala [which is super fake Dungen]). Or Gonjasufi and Flying Lotus. Or Guided By Voices (Bee Thousand is the one to get). Or early Giorgio Moroder. You can never go wrong listening to Fela Kuti while drinking. Do you like the '80s? As re-imagined by kids not old enough to have lived through it? Then check out Toro y Moi or Nite Jewel or Washed Out. You want innocuous and more laid back? The new Massive Attack is nice as is the National (as noted by many above). I also like the new Caetano Veloso. Bibio and Working for a Nuclear Free City are two electronic-based groups that are nice. Oh, I've also been really liking Bear in Heaven, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Pantha du Prince lately. I've also been telling people to check out Shabazz Palaces. Awesome avant-ish hip hip.

So, in general, dear Sharon, tell me what you're tired of and I'll try to tell what you might want to check out.

Nice to see Evan Parker and Theo Bleckmann getting some notice here. I've never heard Parker live, but I did see Bleckmann with Ben Monder play here two years ago. What he does with voice and electronics is amazing.

Talking about wine and music Luca Roagna and Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven (mostly known as singer/songwriter in norwegian black metal-group Satyricon) will shortly be releasing two wines together. The collaboration started when die hard wine-enthusiast (and also wine-writer) Sigurd Wongraven found out Luca Roagna is a huge Satyricon-fan.

Alleanza Nero di Wongraven 2009 and Barolo Unione Nero di Wongraven 2006 will have official release on October 21st.
