NWR: music

The last few nights at dinner (we listen to an LP side while dining) Jean Gilles has gone very well with Riesling. But I cannot vouch for his effect from other formats.

How about these musical choices?

With Spanish purple wine, Ruthie Foster, no doubt. Both seem satisfying to us oldsters with oldtime tastes.

Once again, Don Rice brings the beauty.

I am sifting through these recs, as iPod withers in repetition, melting into its grooves.

Oh, and wine was just a pretext, c'mon. Music can be enjoyed without a glass handcuffed to one's wrist. I think.

2008 Savary Chablis goes more than nicely with late 1940s/early 1950s Bud Powell who showed an amazing synthesis of the Bach he learned at Julliard and the bop he learned with Bird et al. Of course, the fact that there are other musicians such as Bird, Fats Navarro, young Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach performing doesn't hurt.

Later this evening, it'll be Andrs Schiff live doing Mendelssohn and Schumann, but, alas, they don't allow me to bring wine to the concert, so maybe a little half of Paul Bara ros to relax with afterwards.

Just for the record, the originator of the term "hip," from which derives "hipster," was one Lester Willis Young, as hip a guy as ever lived.

These are wine names, right?

For an entertaining variety of Old + New (i.e. old stuff that you may never have heard), go to Wolfgang's Vault website, which has been posting for streaming and occasional downloading a lot of recordings, mostly live, from Bill Graham's archives among others. Rock, jazz, bluegrass, folk, blues. Some remarkable stuff, for example:

--Stones (Mick Taylor on slide guitar edition) in Belgium with Mick J babbling in French to the audience between songs.

--Youssou N'Dour in Brazil in 1988 with an incredible band.

--Johnny Winter dropping in on a Son Seals session at the Bottom Line, much guitar wrestling follows.

Lots of curiosity value and some excellent music as well.
