SPAM: Verset

Cristian Dezso
Sorry for the spam post but given that some (many?) of you are interested in Verset, I could not help myself not posting this.

I received an offer from Flickinger Wines in Chicago:
2003 Verset Cornas - $29 (10 cases available, arriving Spring 2011)
2005 Verset Cornas - $31 (15 cases available, arriving Spring 2011)
order 6 or more mix and match and get 5% off. Send email to orders@flickwine.com

I have absolutely no affiliation/interest whatsoever. I just thought that this is a very good deal and some of you might appreciate it.

If this is inappropriate, Politburo please delete the post and accept my apologies.

Due to a problem in the vintage, the '05 is 5% off....great deal

Yes. I've bought quite a bit from them. They are reliable. (They double as a wine-storage warehouse, so no problems with conditions.)

I'm a local and buy from Flickinger frequently. Prices are good, and they consistently source a few makers with spotty coverage elsewhere in Chicago (Musar, Guiberteau, Lambert, Vatan, Cornas from anybody interesting). No problems with storage that I can discern.

I've ordered several times and been happy. I have some wines waiting to be shipped (even before this offer).

John - I'm glad to hear about their storage. It's another plus.

The problem was not in the vintage but with the announcement. Initially they said 2003 & 2004, and then changed it to 2003 & 2005, and because they made this mistake in announcing the vintage they offered 5% off of 6+ bottles. They come out $28.50 each, which I think is more than fair, even though some of the original vineyards were sold.

I think you'd want to know where these wines came from. If they came direct from Verset, they may have been sitting in his above-ground garage baking for several years.

I just spoke with them and apparently they sat in a warehouse in Britain since release. Not sure if the conditions in the warehouse are better than the ones at Verset, but they said they tried them and the wines are good. So what can I say? I might end up with a few bad bottles, but at this price I thought it might be worth the risk, and I also hope that if the wine turns out to be damaged, they might have a policy to deal with that.

Flickinger's own storage is very good, though some of their sources (they have a lot of gray market stuff) can be iffy. I've bought a bunch from them, had some really good bottles and a few that were heat damaged.

They're usually my go to place for Allemand and Musar. Never seen any Verset there before. But they didn't get back to me on either my phone call or my email so I have no idea if my order went through.

Seems like they had a huge response to the offer so everybody has to wait to have a confirmation...

I've been buying quite a lot from them and so far so good but a few friends also confirmed that sometimes the provenance is not so reliable, storage wise...
Have no idea though for those Verset.

That's of course much better than having it sit in Verset's garage all the time. But beware that the stuff Verset sent to UK sat in cask in his garage for a second summer, while Kermit always had his bottled and shipped the previous spring. I've preferred Kermit's bottlings. OTOH, the amount of Verset around is little and dwindling fast.

So, any comments on Alain Verset Cornas?

"Last year you ordered some Noel Verset Cornas from us. The wine has arrived at our warehouse, and as our warehousemen have checked in the wine they noticed that the wine was bottled under the name of Noel's nephew Alain. In 2000 Noel Verset sold part of his vineyards to Thierry Allemand, Auguste Clape, and Franck Balthazar; the remainder he handed over to his nephew, Alain.

Although Alain is now working the remainder of the vineyards - same vines, same winery - as Noel, it appears Noel may have continued to release tiny amounts (25-50 cases) of wine under his own name for some years after his retirement. We haven't actually seen any of these wines available anywhere in the US or Europe, but other merchants, like us, have offered wines under Noel’s name, and we believe that we have all been offering the same wine, which is the same wine reviewed by WS and IWC.

We apologize for the confusion. We believe we have sold you the 'Verset Cornas', but some may have assumed that Noel was the maker, rather than Alain. It is the only Cornas from any Verset that we can find on the market post-2000, but if you would like to cancel your order, please let us know and we will be happy to do so.

Again, please accept our apologies, and please don't hesitate to email or call if you would like to discuss it further."

Alain Verset and Noël Verset had separate cellars and separate wines in them -- I have been in both. Alain helped Noël quite a bit post-2000, but to the best of my knowledge, it is not correct to say that post-2000 wines bottled under Noël's name are Alain's wines or that they are identical to the wines bottled under Alain's name. Alain, I believe, also had some vines that he received from his father Louis (before you get excited, there's a reason why you never heard about Louis's wines), and I don't think those went into Noël's wines. But remember that Noël in the 2000s was becoming quite aged, and what Alain did while working with Noël is not necessarily exactly the same as what Noël would have done in earlier years.

The quote above, too, seems to have gotten wrong the 2000 sale of Verset's vineyards in 2000. It was divided between Clape and Courbis, with the remainder going to Alain.

Thanks Claude. How are the Alain Verset wines since that seems to be what I have on order?

Only had them once, back about 2007? (2006 from barrel and 2005 from bottle?) and haven't looked at my notes in quite a while. I recall their being decent but not exceptional. He has a very warm cellar and still works as a postman, so it's kind of a hobby wine. Verset's UK importer took him on; Kermit Lynch had a look at the wines and decided not to take him on.
