Oddero

So let me get this straight: basic Oddero is trashed with new oak but the crus are glorious perfume? And presumedly the 05 and succeeding vintages do not share this demon?

(call me a dim bulb today but this figures strongly in cellar strategy)

I have had the base 04 Oddero twice but alas, both times flawed bottles. Have some 04 crus tucked away. Anyone have experience with the 78 by chance?

Oddero is one of the producers whose older vintages Jamie has been able to consistently bring into CSW, so I was lucky enough to try most of the great old vintages.

My recollection of the individual years has been somewhat conflated, but they've all been classic. 78 Barolo was fully mature- I had worried it was over the hill when first popped and poured. It took an hour or so to bloom and is a bit more ceder-y and sandalwood focused with some muddy edges. Not as supple as some of the other vintages, but in line with other 78s.

I've had the most 74s in both Barbaresco and Barolo, as it's my vintage too. There's been a bit more variation than expected in bottles from the same lots of reliable providence, but I've not tasted as deeply in other vintages to know if it's characteristic of the house or simply Old Wine Variability. My guess is a bit of both. I've been generally happy and occasionally enchanted.

The 64 Barbaresco has been stunning on three occasions and stands out as one of the finest examples of older Nebbiolo I've ever had.

70 and 79 Barolo have also provided pleasure, as has 71 in Barolo and Barbaresco. A 58 was a very profound and melancholy experience of faded beauty.

Let's not get carried away. Some of us found the '04 normale to show an obvious, if not egregious oak signature. Other respectable board denizens took offense at the notion (this is a respectable, traditional producer for Doghead's sake!) and for a time those of us who found the wood were held to be insane in the membrane.

Messenger pigeons later reported that some older botti were replaced in the '04 vintage at la casa di Oddero, and that rather than taint the crus with l'odore di quercia they ran the normale through the new botti.

So rather than a deliberate stylistic change it would appear that this was an unfortunate side-effect of a one-time refreshing of cooperage.
