If you've spent any time in Ann Arbor, you probably bumped into Dick Scheer. The VC is set to close on November 6.
His selection of French and Italian wines has always stood out in the state. I'll be making a trip to see if there are any deals to be had.

Dick has said that a new location is forthcoming, and with the off site collection he has, I would hope that that is the case. It would be a shame to see the shop and the knowledgeable staff disappear from the area wine scene.
 
That would be a shame indeed if those wines disappeared. I spent a month in Ann Arbor during the summer of 2004 and was oh so happy to discover Village Corner, especially the odd German rieslings and Loire wines from the 90s.
 
Yes, exactly. It was the 7-10 year old bottles of Claude's sauvignon blanc that had me flummoxed/impressed. Not exactly a common wine.
 
Yes. I forget the name of the cuvee. But when I met Claude and told him about it he was pretty shocked. Apparently he only made it a couple of years and didn't sell very much. (Perhaps that's why it was still kicking around Village Corner).

Me too. Six-packs of Stroh's in the late '70s. Especially Stroh's Bock when it was in season.

Hell, you guys got me beat. All I ever got there during my time at Michigan was some ramen and chocolate (wasn't a very healthy vegetarian). I did go back a couple years ago and grabbed some '04 Dauvissat.

Interesting. You know, for reasons even I don't completely understand, I would kill to drink this wine, although I can pretty much imagine exactly what it tastes like. Where were the vines? Anjou?
 
VC is not closing, it's moving from where it's been for 40 years. It may be a while before it reopens, but that's the plan.
 
I bought cigarettes there when I lived in A2. Before I was legal to buy alcohol. Refugee from Berkeley. Back in the day...
met Dick at a tasting put together by Robert Mayberry and Steve Grant, in Evanston, in '89. Taught me so much about how to do what I do. And concrete.
Glad they're not gone altogether. May they live long and thrive!

Thanks for the information, Chris. Have they forgiven you yet in Ann Arbor for that blown timeout call in '93?

Currently their license is in limbo. Can't sell anything until they get a new storefront. Ck it out:

One of Dick's tastings in '85 with Robert Mayberry ("the professor") was one of the first tastings I ever went to.

The last tasting I went to was a couple hours ago. '07,'08,'09 Southern Rhones. Good stuff.

So they're still around, trying to figure out where to relocate to, and not wanting to move very far.
 
Dick is a force. I am looking forward to perusing Burgundy in his new location.

The combo he's looking for is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack, though - affordable square footage, in that neighborhood, with parking. I hope he strikes gold.
