So, Frank, Lagavulin has a diesel component on the nose? I am just beginning to learn about single-malts. Thus far favorites have been from Oban, Cragganmore and Glenmorangie.
I'd say you have good taste in Scotch as well as in wine, John. Oban is from the western isles and has just enough peat smoke in it to perfectly satisfy my desire for smokiness. I like all 3 that you mentioned.
Lagavulin and Laphroaig are a little over the top, I still enjoy them, but you get very definite diesel and a certain phenolic medicinal tinge as well. They are really for gentle sipping, nobody could guzzle those scotches.
If you Google "Diesel" with those Scotch names you will find it is a rather common descriptor for the rather heavy olfactory note. In comparison "petrol" comes off as light, sweet, and elegant.
