Extracted, oaky, hot

The 1997 was my favorite though I also liked the 1998 quite a lot. The 1999, 2000 and 2001 were all good wines for which I'd consider paying $40 or so. The 2004, 2005 and 2006 I wouldn't pay a penny for and in fact I poured them all out. The 2005 was the best of the three as at least there was some ripe fruit battling the oak tannins.

I've regretted for years that Chave had gotten too expensive for me. Looks like I dodged a bullet. When I consider that I switched that niche over to Allemand I can only be grateful.

I haven't had recent vintages except for declining quality and increased girth in the negoce line, but the talking behind Chave's back by others over in France have made me curious. Lapierre told me in June the wines were over. Sad! People blame it on Erin, but forget that J-L went to UC Davis.
 
I'll try to get my notes up from the evening sometime, but it was depressing. You can start to see the transition in the '98-'00, '01 seemed like a throwback, but '04-'06 were woody and extracted as hell.

Re: Chave...I liked the 93 and 94 a lot...yes, those vintages...great...stop buying them 5-6 years ago however.

At least the 2005 had some simple froot that made it a little more drinkable than the 2004 and 2006.

True. Somehow you also seemed to like the '00 more than I did. I found it entirely too minty.

Yes, and you liked the '01 more than I did. Though I still agreed that the '01 was better than the '00 I didn't think either of them were worth more than $20 or so. As opposed to the '04-'06 which I wouldn't have given $1 for.
