Am I just unfair?

I wonder why I diss Thevenet in Morgon. I don't often buy the wines, mostly because I fear Brett. I have a notion that this has been a big problem for them.

But within the last 24 hours, I've had two different vintages of his Morgon VV in my glass, and they've been great. Tonight I stumbled upon a bottle of 2004 in the fat bottle storage section of my home fridge. Was this a late release through CSW? I don't recall for sure, but it's a Kermit bottle. Anyhow, the wine is lovely. Not a plush 2009, quite pale, it still has a bit of a grip in the back end and is a somewhat lean package. But the aromatics are just beautiful and the grip is fine with my leftovers. Still plenty of deep gamay fruit, but leafy boletic complexity has crept in as well. I didn't cellar too many 2004s, but it seems I should have put away a few more. A lesson to everyone disappointed to miss out on this or that 2009. Though I would not keep 2004s indefinitely, the fruit on this wine may not outlive the structure.

Last night .sasha and I dropped by 10 Bells for their Beaujolais extravaganza. They have 18 different wines by the glass, it's fabulous fun. The '09 Thevenet Morgon was a fine example of a riper vintage, and it was clean as a whistle.

What's the matter with my generalizations?

Everything I know seems built on sand.

I need more calm reflection, and broader tasting.

I bought 6 bottles of 2005 Thevenet. The first two were undrinkably bretty (and I am very brett tolerant). I traded the rest to a friend who thinks '70s Beaucastel is too clean.

wasn't that an 08 ? I kind of assumed, and didn't ask. Tasted like one.

Ooooh, wait. You are so right. It sure did. I am stoned. Or was then.

But it was still clean, right?

In the mid to late 90's, the Thevenet wines were my favorite of the "gang of five (or is it four? I am having trouble with my marketing slang)" cru Beaujolais, which was the entire universe of decent Beaujolais available at that time in my market.

you've gotta share the good stuff, man - then we'd both be going on about how wonderful 09 thevenet was, right now.

it was clean for sure, but i was too distracted by foillard 07F and 08M to really pay attention.

Oh, I would not mean to imply that it was in that league. Just that there was no Brett and that the wine was nice.

Funny, I could have sworn that Coad gave you that 04 Thevenet a few months ago, over a bottle of 1990 Joguet at Landmarc.

Thevenet 09 in our flight: clean as a whistle, fruity, and thus disturbing

Lapierre 09, this bottle: fucked, but we all knew it could go this way

Chamonard 08: sweet and delicious

WTF ??

Oh, I get it.

She's so gay tonight
She's like spring tonight
She's a rollicking, frollicking thing tonight
So disarming, soft and charming
She is not thinking of me
No, she's not thinking of me

Damn! You're right. At least someone around here retains a bit of brain.

(two zombies at Jon Stewart rally holding signs. One reads, "What do we want? Brains!" The other: "When do we want them? Brains!")

My take on Thevenet - I've said it a lot - when it's on, it's the height of the appellation, but I bat around .500 with it. I don't buy a lot for that reason.

My best ever Beaujolais is the 93 VV.

I think he needs to use more SO2 for his exports.

His 09 is my favorite of the vintage along with a couple others.

I may be a retard for saying this, actually I may be a retard anyway, but I don't really care for all this fruit that I am finding in 09s.

Maybe drinking a lot of traditional Barolo has my palate a bit skewed.

Agreed here. I find the '07s much more to my liking.

That's amazing, because I was about to specifically say that I preferred '07s to '09s in certain instances, but thought the censure would be too much to handle so soon after I woke up in the day.
