Ian Fitzsimmons
2002 Meulenhof Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett:

Weak and washed-out on opening; better day two, but modest and refined, rather than zingy or powerful.

2002 von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn:

Definite wow. Second of these I've opened recently, and one of the best Kabinetts I've enjoyed, bordering on Spaetlese weight. Pure, steely sensation, modest sweetness that evaporates with air time, great balance, complexity. Great wine, definitely in Rheingau cast.

1999 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese:

Decent but unexceptional - not a great year, perhaps too young for a Prum AL. Touch of gasoline. Okay as aperitif.

2004 Fevre Fourchaume Valoraunt:

This is beautiful, ravishing, elegant: delicate finesse plus swampy Chablis flavor. I've read this bit of Fourchaume abuts Preusse and believe it. Needs a bit of air, may improve, good for present drinking if you fear premox.

2000 Petite Eglise:

Also in a good place, after a lengthy dumb spell. Nicely furry, middling-rich b'x, pulls you up on the finish.

2003 Jaboulet Thalabert:

I've been reading Jaboulet obituaries, but this wine is drinking very nicely now over a three-day stretch. Impressive, sauvage N. Rhone syrah with depth and complexity.

1999 Vieux Donjon:

Also very nice: smooth, round, pleasant to drink; edges and imbalances of its youth all gone. I've been hasty in casting CdP wholesale into outer darkness, perhaps.

NV Tissot Cremant de Jura

Delicious: smooth, balanced, clean; with time yeasty, blanc-de-blanc-like flavors, modestly proportioned. This is like Champagne for everyday. Made from Chardonnay? Going back for more.

2002 Burguet Bourgogne Pince Vin

Large and voluminous on opening, much bigger than 02 villages I've opened from lesser domaines. Settles down quickly. I'm drinking this now and not sure where it's headed, but it's lot of wine for a Bourgogne.

Whew! When I saw your name my first thought was that you'd written to chew me out again for failing to include any Italian wines. Thanks for confirming the Tissot variety.

Thanks. The 99 AL was better today, showing some spine and steel, sweetness abating. Sequestered overnight in a sealed 375 bottle.

The Burguet settled down to an attractive sour cherry hum. Not complex, but enjoyable; perfect for an evening when I can't muster the attention and concentration a fancier wine might demand.

I've had great luck with the 2001, including just this past weekend. Glacially pure and electric wine, superbly balanced.

Ernst Loosen was the one who taught me when to drink Prums. Multiply initial estimate by 2 for kab/spat, 3 for aus (inc. GK), and 5 for everything else. Then add another 10 years. Repeat for all vintages.

the formula for when to drink loosen is much simpler these days.

opening 98 urz wurz spat on thursday, too soon i assume, but i have more.

i like this one too. though, i think i preferred it a couple of years ago, when there was still more tingle from the co2 in the wine. i find that though in many ways it's prettier now -- in a big boned way -- it's also slightly less fun (hence i could also understand someone having the opposite preference). because of its freshness, i'd definitely give the nod to the 02 at the moment (which, genius that i am, i bought in far smaller quantities than the 01....)

Which one? The auction wine?

Langwerth von Simmern arguably was THE leading Rheingau estate in the 1960s and 1970s and maybe before, and then seemed to fall off a cliff. They've come back quite well in the 21st century.

I'm a believer. Opened the 02 Marcobrun SL some time ago - too young, no note - but I remember the first mouthful made me sit straight up and do a perfect comic double-take.
