Dominique Mugneret

Well, Jay always says ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw, but this producer sounds like the rule that proves the exception.

Thanks Levi.

Sheeeet, are we going to have to go through this with every name in Burgundy? Buy, drink, let us know. Thanks for playing.

Pedantry warning! No such thing as grand cru Chambolle. Musigny and Bonnes-Mares are appellations unto themselves, although they can be declassified to Chambolle.

Domaine de la Vougeraie Musigny and Bonnes-Mares are the old Ponnelle holdings in Musigny and Bonnes-Mares. The Bonnes-Mares is located in the fault part of Bonnes-Mares so is on flat/flatish exposition. I haven't tasted the Vougeraie wines since Pascal Marchand left, but they were of very good quality under his stewardship.

As for older bottles of Ponnelle, there was of course the scandal that wound up with Ponnelle going to jail (in the late 1970s, IRRC), but back in the 1950s and 1960s, the wines had an excellent reputation. I expect that there was some bought-in wine, as well as the estate stuff because the surface area of the estate Musigny and BM are so small.

I think the objections to this domaine usually have more to do with oak than fruit, but I guess they are both issues.

Cool.

wasn't there some connection with roumier in the 40s ?

you know, this is probably not making Ian feel any better.

that rings a bell, thanks. I've heard rumours of ponnelle moose from the 40s directly benefitting from the relationship but could not confirm.

Pour que no? Here's an interesting discussion on a producer I've never heard of; what's not to like? Levi and Keith dealt with my initial query, at least until I get a chance to try some myself.

Christophe's uncle, Alain Roumier, was the rgisseur at de Vog (as was Christophe's grandfather Georges), and of course de Vog owns 2/3 of Musigny and sold widely to negociants in the old days, so I think it probable that old Ponnelle Musignys had de Vog as at least one source.

BTW, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, the opera set designer who died in 1988, was, I believe, of the same family.

in which case, to add a little disorienting detail to that advice, try an "off year." like many a middle-of-the-road glossy bullshit producer, this mugneret tones it down when ripeness is an issue. i actually liked the 98s here enough to dip into the fatpurse for some echezeaux. i have made worse decisions.
