'99 Clos Roche Blanche Gamay

These wines are like family heirlooms and I probably hang on to them too long because I just don't want to ever be without them. At first it seemed like all was lost and the wine had passed on to the other side but after an hour it righted itself and now, 24 hours later, it is essentially the same old wine it has always been. A little rust in the nose, dried fruit, still quite tannic, fine texture, balanced and long in the mouth. And I do remember that '99 was a tough vintage and come to think of it we visited that year and I climbed a ladder and had a sniff of this exact wine while it was fermenting in a large open top vat. Truly amazing.

I opened a 2002 with Oswaldo last week, and it was not a great showing. I think we were both flying out of town, so we didn't keep the bottle to see what happened, but I was disappointed compared to other showings of 2002 this year.

I look forward to having another look, and give all credit for my CRB necrophilia to you, Kay, since you first shared a bottle with some age with me lo these many years ago.

It's funny, I kind of feel the same way about my lone bottle of '04 Pif. As much as I'd love to drink it, I just can't bring myself to do it. Yet. I'd love to hang on to it for a while longer to see where it goes.

Unfortunately the oldest bottle I have these days is the 2002 Cot and I'm still holding that one for at least another few years.

Sounds good, the 10 year mark is generally recommended for cracking into the Cot.

thanks to that one particular myth, the fatsink has been enjoying the 96 cot on a regular basis for years now. it remains stubbornly closed, stubbornly weird, and air doesn't help. i sometimes wonder whether didier didn't decide to model the wine on an 83 gevrey, just to fuck with us.

i have some 02s that my heart tells me to open now, or ignore for another dozen years or more.

my head says, "you never fucking learn, fatbrain."

The 1998 Cot is gorgeous if it isn't horrifically corked. Of course that's a much lighter vintage.
