These wines are like family heirlooms and I probably hang on to them too long because I just don't want to ever be without them. At first it seemed like all was lost and the wine had passed on to the other side but after an hour it righted itself and now, 24 hours later, it is essentially the same old wine it has always been. A little rust in the nose, dried fruit, still quite tannic, fine texture, balanced and long in the mouth. And I do remember that '99 was a tough vintage and come to think of it we visited that year and I climbed a ladder and had a sniff of this exact wine while it was fermenting in a large open top vat. Truly amazing.
