Giving Thanks

I wanted to give thanks to you guys for helping me waste a good portion of my time at home and at work here at the best place to talk about talking about wine. Thanks also to my family for driving me to drink. Lastly thanks to wine for being awesome. Cheers all.

Saying Yes! to Michigan by starting the thanks with the "Consort" sparkler from L. Mawby and 'pairing' it with a home-made cheese ball & Ritz crackers and some summer sausage. Keepin' it reals in mid-Michigan.

Occhipinti Frappato is the bestest Thanksgiving wine ever!
It's the bestest most other days as well.

I'm doing three Thanksgivings today. Two family dinners, one friend. I get to drink the first official Selection Massale wine today. It's a fine day.

It is all I want to drink the past couple weeks.

Congrats on the first Selection Massale wine.

Looking forward to seeing some offers. Congrats on getting this going.

A bunch of 2009s today with turkey and stuffing - Brun Morgon (day 2), followed by Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette & Brun Moulin--Vent. The Brun Morgon was fantastic, having been tight yesterday - both the Coudert and Moulin--Vent were tight but clearly all the ingredients are there. Enough left over to re-sample tomorrow. These are all amazingly great wines for the price of entry. Also quite nice was 2004 Domaine Belleville Rully Premier Cru Montpalais - apples, pears, butterscotch with crisp acidity - not a hint of oxidation.

With blueberry crumble

...a nice bottle of 1997 Grande Maison Monbazillac Cuve Mademoiselle - not complex, but still plenty of acidity and nice sweetness that complemented the dessert quite well.

Even good wine can taste so-so in small straightsided crystal glasses. I give thanks for the fact that I love my relatives anyway :)

We also opened a bottle of the '09 Brun Morgon tonight. Went well enough with dinner, but wasn't really showing much. I saved a good glass or so of it to try tomorrow. Hopefully it'll show more like yours did. And agree about the Moulin-a-Vent. Had some at a recent tasting and thought it had all the parts, but was incredibly tannic.

I hear you on that one. A common sentiment at our holiday meals as well! (Although the glasses aren't quite that bad).

Did an '09 Lapierre Morgon and it was youthful, a little tight but still plenty giving and shows tremendous potential. An '07 Eitelsbacher Karthuserhofberg Sptlese served the white wine drinkers in the crowd - it was full of petrol and citrus backed up with subdued tropical notes. Both aromatically voluminous, and solid drink and hold winners. Very satisfying on all counts. I am thankful for family, for the emininently edifying discussion on this board, for the opportunity to purchase food from the hands of the farmers who grew it and put it to the task of nourishing my loved ones, and lastly for the chance to dine at home and drink great Beaujolais in an appropriate glass.

For us and our friends it was an Osso Bucco dinner, with 2006 Giuseppe Rinaldi baroli. The Cannubi San Lorenzo - Ravera was fuller, fatter, and interestingly enough more tannic, and more typical barolo, whereas the Brunate - Le Coste was easy drinking, but nonetheless wonderfully balanced. We also lucked out big time with a 2004 Vietti Rocche, which was, surprisingly drinking better than the above wines. Better wine? I dunno, perhaps, but so early in their life it is hard to say. All in all, I think one of the best barolo nights for me. Wonderful wines, and reinforcing my faith in the wines I spend 95% of my money on.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

09 MMIX and Tardive last night for cooking
dead 91 Weinbach Theo Gew.
00 Trimbach Seigneurs Gew.
81 Lucien Barrot CnP *excellent*
89 Raymond Lafon (as yet unopened and untasted)

I think this experience has a lot to do with timing, the approachability of the one producer in youth over the other, and the vintages involved.

I opened a 2000 CSLR from G. Rinaldi the other day and it was gorgeous. Great, great. Until it went into shutdown.

They are wines for the long haul.

1990 Hospices de Beaune NSG les SG (Faiveley) was lovely as was a half of 97 Huet CdB moelleux premier trie for dessert. The latter was the first I had tried from half bottles and while still young showed quite nicely with pie, cake and cookies. For fine wines, good friends and all the rest (including decent stemware) I am quite thankful.
